How to Make an Eye on Blender
A guide on how to make an eyeball in the 3D graphics/animation software blender. Download at www.blender.com.
First open up blender(DUH!!).
select the default cube, then delete it.
add a uvsphere.
Now go into front view(NUMPAD1)
Press r, then x then 90. This should rotate it so you can see circles if you
go into edit mode.
tab into edit mode.
Press the occlude geometry button. It is a button over in the right of the 3d window, (it is a picture of a cube)
press a, the b twice. This opens circle select. use the mouse wheel to make the circle cover the area of where the iris will be(the iris is the area of colour in your eye, usually brown, blue, black or hazel).
Now split your 3d window into 2
make the 2nd one a UVimage/editor window
now go save the image of the blue iris. now go back to blender, and you should have the area the the iris will be selected. with the mouse over the 3d window, press u(you must be in edit mode)and click unwrap.
Now that area should be “unwrapped” in the uvimage editor(there should be a circle there.)
in the uvimage window, press image. then open, and find where you saved the image of the blue iris below.
Ok, now the uvimage window should look pretty weird. The circle will have turned into an oval, and wont fit perfectly around the eye. To fix this, press a until all of the circles vertices are selected. now press s, then x and move the mouse closer to the circle until it actually becomes a circle instead of a oval.
Now use s to scale and g to move the vertices until the outer ring of vertices fits perfectly around the iris. You can see how you are going more easily by pressing alt-z in the 3d window, which will “UVmap” the iris onto the eyeball, and if you move the circle in the uv window, it will move on the eyeball.
Now press F12 to render it so far. dont worry, its okay if the iris isnt on there yet, and it is okay if you eye ball is a bit blocky. to put the iris on the render, close the render window, select the eyeball, go into edit mode, make sure the iris’s vertices are ALL selected, then add two new materials. select the second one, then open the shading menu.
Under the “Material” heading, click tex face.
Now go back to the edit menu(F9). Make sure you are in edit mode with the iris’s vertices selected, then click “Assign” which is below the “Select” and “Deselect” buttons on the “Lnks and Materials” window. Now press F12 and you should see the iris mapped onto the eyeball! But it won’t look very good for two reasons.
1. The lamp is way off the the right, so there is nothing lighting up the iris and its way too dark. To fix this move the lamp so that the eye is “looking” at it lol.
2. It is still real blocky. It isnt so noticeable on the iris, but everywhere else it looks **censored**
To fix this, tab into object mode, then press “set smooth” on the links and materials heading.
You should now have a fairly realistic eyeball!
