My Top Five Manga Rules

My Top Five Manga Rules

Do you want to draw manga? Do you have ideas? Well, if you have the guts to stay up until 11:00 or 12:00 at night drawing, we have something in common. These are the rules that I follow, though I may change them over time. So, here are my top five rules.

Rule #5: Follow the rules (lol)

Make up your own rules, then, read others. If you keep doing that, you will eventually end up with a bunch of rules to help you forever( or until you get tired and quit).

Rule #4: Practice

Practice until as long as you can, whenever you can, and however you can. If its on a paper, tissue, or toilet paper, just practice(though I dont suggest using toilet paper).

Rule #3: Pencils

I suggest keeping a few pencils, tons of paper, and definetly an eraser. If you dont want to, you can probably be fine with 1 mechanical and 1 2B pencil. Pens (other than ones that bleed through like sharpies) are suggested to keep on-hand. You may never use them though.

Rule #2: Others can help

You may not want to work on your own. I would suggest working in a pair. One does the story, one does the drawing, or you both do both and help each other. This tip also refers to serialized authors. Try their styles, maybe practice a few, and invent your own.

Rule #1: Be original

Rule 2 says to try others’ styles, but for story and art, its better to be original. I try to get my brother to be original, but he just ends up with a few stories a year(that sound like a mix between a few already serialized stories).

I hope that I didn’t waste too much of your time. I tried to make it simple. Well, thanks for reading.

P.S. Rule #6 is a little important too

Try starting with fan fiction, to get your ideas out, and build off of that. If you dont want to, or it doesn’t work out, this method isn’t for everyone.

P.S.S. Please post your own rules, I would love to hear them.
