Damming the Mighty Dragon

Damming the Mighty Dragon

About the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River.

The Three Gorges Dam is a dam built across the Yangtze River. It is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, and will also be the dam that produces the greatest amount of electricity of any dam. However, experts disagree about whether or not the dam’s benefits will outweigh the negative effects.

The Three Gorges Dam is located about one third of the way from Chongqing to Wuhan. The main reasons that the dam is being built are that it will generate huge amounts of energy, will help control historically deadly flooding, will help shipping on the river, and will create a reservoir which could be used for water. The most significant drawbacks are that many people will be displaced, much of the environment around the area will be destroyed, and that many historical and archaeological sites will be inundated.

The dam is expected to create many benefits. The dam, when completed, will be able to generate an estimated 84.7 billion kWh annually, which will provide enough energy for about 10% of all of China’s electricity needs. The dam will also help control the historically deadly floodwaters. Over the years, the Yangtze River has claimed over 1 million lives. The system of locks in the dam is expected to help increase the amount of shipping that can go through the river. The water from the reservoir can be used for irrigation, drinking, and recreation.

However, there are also many drawbacks to building the three Gorges dam. An estimated 1.9 million people will be displaced by the construction of the dam, and will have to be relocated and compensated. This is because the reservoir created by the dam will cover a huge area, where some people are currently living. Much of the wetland environment in the area will be destroyed, which is the habitat of several endangered species, such as the Siberian crane and the Chinese paddlefish. The reservoir created by the dam will cover some 1,300 archaeological and historical sites. In addition, it will alter the beauty of the Three Gorges.

I am personally in favor of the Three Gorges Dam. If there was less corruption by officials in the construction, then I believe that the benefits would definitely outweigh the drawbacks caused by the construction of the dam. Including corruption, I would still support the dam, but it could cause many other problems, such as faulty construction and relocation of people.
