Fortress
An overview of early Britons.
When you think about the word “fortress”, what do you think? You’ve probably thought about something like a Norman fortress, with a myriad of different kinds of defenses… But there are more than just those fortresses, there are also types of fortresses made by the Norman people. By studying these we can learn more about these far-off people. By looking at the things that we’ve discovered from items that we have found, we now know that these primitive races were not uncultured savages. Some items found include flint, bone, pottery, and bronze, which is gotten by smelting tin and copper. These people Beautifully worked these bronze items into items which they used, or wore, such as pins.
This shows that they had their own craftsmanship and artistic creations. Also, the way they places their defenses shows that they knew where and how to place their homes to have the maximum protection from invaders. This was shown over and over from the places that they have repeatedly placed and made their fortresses. They would build their defense somewhere where there was already some sort of natural defense, preferably a cliff or a steep hill. Since they were usually surrounded by sea, they had very little to defend from.
They made semi circular rings on the top of the hill, then made 3 or 4 of these, so that the invaders would have to go across a very windy, and steep slope, meanwhile they shot arrows at the invaders below.
The contour forts, were the biggest and most elaborated old structures in Britain. The “maiden Castle”, in Dorset, is a bigggg oval fortresses, and it’s two entrances are hidden by twisty, windy ways, that conceal it, so that invaders won’t be able to find the way in easily. Many called these fortresses “plateau forts”
