Innovative Designs: World’s Most Impressive Bridges
Innovativeness and creativeness in the fields of architecture and engineering resulted to some of the most unique and spectacular bridges located on the different parts of the world.
This is a sequel to my article entitled “Spectacular and Uniquely-designed Bridges in the World”.
1. Bridge Pavilion

The astounding Bridge Pavilion in Spain is an innovative design of covered bridge designed Zaha Hadid, a British Iraqi architect. This 270 meters long bridge was constructed for the Expo 2008 in Zaragoza as one of its main landmarks.
2. Peace Bridge

The Peace Bridge which was designed by Santiago Calatrava is a proposed pedestrian bridge that will be built across the Bow River in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. This uniquely designed bridge will amount to $22 million and is expected to be completed in 2010. About 5,000 people daily are estimated to benefit from the bridge that will connect the southern Bow River pathway and Downtown Calgary with the northern Bow River pathway and the community of Sunnyside.
3. Enneüs Heerma Bridge

The Enneüs Heerma Bridge or Enneüs Heermabrug in Dutch located in the Netherlands connects the new urban district of IJburg which was built on seven artificial islands in IJ Lake. This sophisticated bridge that is made of steel has a length of 230 meters, a width of 38 meters, and a height of 26 meters, the suspended deck of the bridge serves to carry a traffic road and a light rail line.
4. Apollo Bridge

The magnificent-looking and sophisticated Apollo Bridge in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is a road bridge built over the Danube River. Its curved lines, inclined arches and virtual absence of right angles make the geometric shape of the bridge very futuristic. This bridge with a span of 231 meter was the only European project named one of five finalists for the 2006 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award (OPAL Award) by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
5. Esplanade Bridge

Singapore will not be considered as one of the most progressive countries in the world for nothing. One manifestation of the country’s scores of unique and innovative architectural and structural designs is the Esplanade Bridge, a 260 meter long road bridge over the Singapore River. The low-level concrete arched bridge has 7 spans and is 70 meter-wide. The bridge supports two four-lane carriageways and walkways along both sides. In addition, this bridge looks splendid because of its beautiful landscape.
6. Seri Saujana Bridge

A bridge that looks fabulously elegant during day time but more impressively awesome at night is the Seri Saujana Bridge, a main bridge in Putrajaya in Malaysia. The bridge’s design is unique cable-stayed arch bridge. This new concept of the cable-stayed arch bridge where the bridge is controlled by the principal design parameters to reflect a transparent, elegant and futuristic slender looking structure has an overall single span of 300m and total width of 32m.
7. Oberbaumbrücke

This bridge may be old-looking but it is still magnificent. The Oberbaumbrücke, a double-deck bridge over River Spree in Berlin, is considered one of the city’s popular landmarks. This classic bridge that still looks attractive connects Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. It is an important symbol of Berlin’s unity.
8. Puente de la Unidad

The spectacular Puente de la Unidad or Viaducto de la Unidad in Mexico is a cable-stayed bridge designed by Oscar Bulnes. The bridge crosses the Santa Catarina River and connects the cities of Monterrey and San Pedro Garza Garcia in Nuevo Leon state.
9. Rama VIII Bridge

The uniquely designed 2.45 km Rama VIII Bridge over the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand consists of a single pylon located approximately one-third of the distance from the northwest end of the bridge. Golden suspension cables extend from this pylon to the road surface. This bridge is one of the city’s most remarkable tourist attractions.
10. Pegasus Bridge

The historical Pegasus Bridge is a bascule bridge, a type of movable bridge, was built in 1934. It crosses the Caen Canal between Caen and Ouistreham, in Normandy, France. It is formerly known as Benouville Bridge and played a vital role during WWII Normandy’s invasion. It was renamed Pegasus Bridge in 1944 in honor of the operation. The name is derived from the shoulder emblem worn by the British airborne forces, which is the flying horse Pegasus.
**** Bonus unique bridges…
Bridge to Nowhere

The Bridge to Nowhere is a concrete road bridge with very common structural design. It is located over the Mangapurua Stream in Whanganui National Park, New Zealand. Nothing unique in design, nothing innovative! What makes it different from other bridges? Well, it has no roads leading to it, yet it is a popular tourist attraction. It was built in 1917, mainly for would be farmers mostly returning soldiers from WWI, with original plan to build roads to it later, but the area proved to be so remote and not suitable for farming.
Bridge of No Return

If New Zealand has “Bridge to Nowhere”, Korea has a bridge called “Bridge of No Return”. It is built and located in the Joint Security Area (JSA) and crosses the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) between North Korea and South Korea. The bridge was used for prisoner exchanges at the end of the Korean War in 1953. The name originates from the fact that prisoners were given the choice to remain in the country of their captivity or cross over to the other country. But if they chose to cross the bridge, they would never be allowed to return.

Awesome bridges, used to drive for a living so I’ve crossed countless bridges and most of them looked nothing like these unique ones though I like The Bridge to Nowhere the best.
