Is There Really a Need for Height?

More width and less height is needed in buildings.

Is there really a need for tall buildings? It used to be to get the most bang for your buck you had to build the tallest building to get notoriety and tenants who want to be in such a recognizable building.

But does not make sense anymore?

You’ve got terrorism and 9/11 that made builders reconsider tall buildings. But after years of thought they have decided to build tall again with the Freedom Tower. It is not necessary to build big buildings anymore. To get the old space of the twin towers four other buildings, including the Freedom tower, of varying height will be built. But three of these buildings will be of lesser height.

It seems to me you can get more office space by buying out a block of buildings demolish them and then build a bunch of towers half as tall as the empire space building yet get extra office space by being wider not the tallest building.

I think it is unethical to build world record tall buildings around the world. We are trusting to fate that some terrorist group will not target it and try and topple it like the World Trade Center.

I can’t even imagine going up into the Empire State Building or any other building of great height because I don’t want to be a victim of terrorists. This is what they have done, scared people, who are already unnerved by the height, to go up in a tall building to take pictures of the scenery.

I went a couple of times into the World Trade Center and took lovely pictures of the city but I keep thinking I could have been there when the terrorists struck, observing the view and been killed. I don’t’ need that on my conscious.

I think at some point society has to ask is this building really worth the height? I mean if you look at other buildings in the area they are 30 stories 50 stories. The twin towers were 110 stores almost double the buildings around it.

A lot of people say the twin towers kind of ruined the skyline by being way too tall and way to unsightly, and they would be right. What was needed in that area was similar height buildings or one massively wide building that was 50 stories?

If we can look at buildings in a new way of width and some height instead of dizzying height with little width then maybe we will have turned the corner on new kinds of buildings.
