Large Home in Menges Mills

This home has a foundation of local stone that can be seen at the satellite dish. Brick was used above for appearance but the local stone was plentiful and easily transported short distances to build homes. The stone for this home probably was transported less than a quarter of a mile. The brick is definitely local, probably Oxford brick from New Oxford. The roof line is very ornate. The back of the house sports a porch off the main floor and one off the second floor. The entrance to the basement is at ground level at the back of the home.
The spouting on the home has been replaced in recent years and the curved spouting fell to the current square spouting.
This home is certainly one that would have been occupied by the upper crust of the society and that family was most likely not involved in farming based on the other building.

Carriage Barn Menges Mills

This is not a barn that would have been used by someone raising livestock or even by someone engaged in farming who would have had possibly as many as a dozen horses. This was used to house about four horses and the carriage and wagon the family used for transportation. Note the double front door that was the early version of a two car garage. The left door rolled back over the right to open but the right door was hinged and swung out to open. If you look at the right “garage door” you can see where strap hinges allowed another smaller door to walk in, or maybe lead out a horse. The white door on the side was the access to the stable area. There are two doors at the loft level for putting in hay and straw. The area to the extreme left was probably used for what it is now used for, storing wood for winter.
