Parthenon
Description of Parthenon.
I am doing the Parthenon for my history project. This is the most famous of Greek temples. Its great art work and gigantic statue of Athena make it this temple one of the greatest Ancient structures in the world.
The Parthenon was a great structural work of art and even though it is in ruins it would be standing today if an unfortunate event hadn’t occurred. The Parthenon was designed by Phidius and built in 448-432 B.C. The Parthenon was built in Athens and was funded from money in the Delian League. The Parthenon is famous for its great price, the once beautiful frieze, and the great statue of Athena made out of Chryselephantine (a mixture of ivory and gold). The Parthenon was a Doric style temple. It was different from other temple because it had eight columns on the front, most have six. The Parthenon measured 111ft. by 228ft. The Parthenon was destroyed only because in 1687 an ammunition depot exploded creating damage that is seen today.
The Parthenon was built for Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. The frieze on the front of the Parthenon depicts a contest between Neptune and Athena to decide who got to name the then nameless city. Obviously Athena won. The meaning of Parthenon is “of the parthenos.” Parthenos means “young maiden” which is what they called Athena. The Parthenon was expensive. It cost about 469 silver talents. Athens could make their warships for about one talent.
As you can see the Parthenon has a lot of History behind it and has many interesting secrets.
