The Great Pyramids of Giza
Here, you will find out about the great pyramids of Giza.
There are three big pyramids in Giza. They are Khufu’s Pyramid, Khufre’s Pyramid, and Menkaure’s Pyramid. Khufre is Khufu’s son and Menkaure is Khufre’s son. In Khufre’s Pyramid, the stones were so tight that a card couldn’t even fit through any of the stones.
A pyramid is a man-made mountain of stone in a triangular shape. They are shaped like a triangle because it is supposed to be a pathway to heaven or their afterlife. All of the Giza pyramids were built more than four thousand years ago and they are all around five hundred feet tall. These three pyramids are built in perfect alignment to three different stars. It takes over two million stone blocks for each pyramid. The pyramids in Giza are the only ones left in the world that are still intact. The weight of each stone block is around fifty to eighty tons.
The Great Pyramid of Giza which was Khufu’s pyramid stands on the northern edge of the Giza Plateau. The Great Pyramid is located about ten miles west of Cairo, Egypt. The Greeks listed the Great Pyramid the first wonder of the world. It is one of the only seven in the world that still remains. The Great Pyramid has over two and one half million blocks of limestone. Each limestone block weighs two to seventy tons apiece. The base of the Great Pyramid covers over thirteen acres. The Great Pyramids volume is around nine million cubic feet. It is four hundred fifty four feet tall and is as tall as a forty eight story building.
The second biggest pyramid in Giza is Khafre’s Pyramid. Khafre’s Pyramid was built in 2558 and 2532BC. Khafre’s Pyramid was built after Khufu’s Pyramid but before Menkaure’s Pyramid. Khafre was responsible for building the Sphinx. Khafre’s Pyramid used to stand four hundred seventy three feet tall. Now it only stands four hundred fifty feet tall. Khafre’s Pyramid’s base is six hundred ninety five feet long. His pyramid was made out of red granite and limestone.
Menkaure’s Pyramid is the smallest pyramid of the three. Menkaure’s Pyramid is located on the Giza Plateau on the southwestern outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. It was built for the burial of the fourth dynasty pharaoh, Menkaure. The height of Menkaure’s Pyramid used to be two hundred fifteen feet, now it is only two hundred three feet tall. The base of this pyramid is three hundred forty four feet wide.
