Amazing Facts About Vincent Van Gogh

Amazing Facts About Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh became famous after his death. During his lifetime he only ever sold one painting. He could not support himself with his art.

Vincent Van Gogh was born in Grot Zundert, Netherlands on March 30th 1853.

Self-Portrait

His parents were Theodorus Van Gogh, a preacher, and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. During his life time Van Gogh only sold one painting, “The Red Vineyard”.

The Red Vineyard

In the 1870’s Van Gogh earned a living as a teacher in a school managed by the Reverend William P. Stokes, in Ramsgate, Kent, England. He later worked as a preacher for a short time.

On December 23rd 1888, Van Gogh cut off the lower part of his left ear, wrapped it in a piece of cloth and took it to a local brothel. He had fallen totally in love with a woman there. He had no money to pay her so, in an insane fit of passion, he offered the ear in payment.

In 1889, Vincent Van Gogh admitted himself to the St. Paul de Mausole lunatic asylum in France under the care of Dr. Theophile Zacharie. Psychiatrists have never agreed completely on the nature of his illness but it is thought that he suffered from frontal lobe epilepsy brought on by drinking large quantities of absinthe. He also had several episodes of bipolar depression.

On July 29th 1890, Vincent Van Gogh committed suicide at the age of 37.

In 1873, the Vincent Van Gogh Museum was opened in Amsterdam.

I love Van Gogh, I’ve got a few of his paintings – originals no doubt.(I wish!)

Some years ago, I saw a huge collection of his work at the Louvre in Paris and fell in love with him. When I went back home to Ireland, I started buying cheaper copies of his work, and then years later had a large copy of his ‘cafe in the street’ framed after I saw a giant one at a museum in Venice. It’s great to see the pictures displayed on spacious walls, it just brings out the special talent he possessed.
