Gustave Moreau: Oedipus and The Sphinx

Gustave Moreau: Oedipus and The Sphinx

What I thought of an artist work.

Hi this paper will be about an artist named Gustave Moreau and his painting entitled “Oedipus And The Sphinx.” Gustave Moreau was born in 1826. His style of art was rather different from the artist of his generation. He used a lot of symbols in his work to carry out the messages behind his artwork. Like most of the French artist from his generation did.

When I went to the museum to look at the artwork one of Moreau’s pieces that caught my attention was the piece entitled “Oedipus And The Sphinx.” when I looked at it I saw four creatures:

  1. A man
  2. A female mixed with
  3. An angel
  4. And a dog

To me this was the weirdest painting that I had ever seen. This was one of his paintings that just showed you just how different he was from the other French artist of his generation. I had never seen a more confusing painting before.

Most artist would just stop after they felt the message had gotten across to the viewer. Gustave Moreau did not stop. He used intensive images in his painting that would create mystery within itself. When I looked at the piece entitled “Oedipus And The Sphinx.” I thought that emotion that was presented was mystery was the exact emotion because in the painting it looks like a man trying to express the feeling of love to a woman but at the same time he looks like he confused when he looks at her. When I looked at the art piece to try to figure out what the message behind it was saying the message was not that clear.

The painting was made out of oil on canvas. Gustave Moreau’s painting style was out of the ordinary. Gustave Moreau spent most of his life and career alone. In my opinion Isolation could have been the emotion that he was trying to get across. It is unclear why he spent most o his life alone. His lifestyle reminded me of when I was younger isolated. Through out his career he worked with artist like degas, or monet. They were artist who painted just like him in seclusion. Although his painting style was quiet different he was looked at like a pioneer in the way that he created his paintings.

To conclude Gustave Moreau led the way for unconventional artists to express their views through the world of art. Gustave Moreau used his irregular style of art to shape the world of art through his eyes. His styles is one that has been replicated through the different generations as artist carried their message out through the world of art.
