Sex Museums in Asia: Exploring Human Sexuality and Erotic Art
Sex museums are popular in Europe during the era of the sexual revolution (end of 1960s and the 1970s). In recent years, these erotic museums have been emerging in Asia as the population becomes more open-minded about sex, and I guess more will be coming up soon.
Sex museums in Asia are becoming more popular as the population begins to open up and talk about sex-related issues. Such museums are mainly focused on documenting the history of erotica with displays, sculptures, paintings, figurines, carvings, photographs, etc. Most of them are also aimed at educating the people about the dangers of sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs).
Here is a compilation of the sex museums in Asia that will amaze you…
China Sex Museum (Tongli, Suzhou)
The China Sex Museum is situated in Tongli, Suzhou. Founded by Liu Dalin, it showcases a huge collection of ceramic, bronze and rock sculptures depicting the erotic art in ancient China. There are 3,700 art pieces that provide a chronological insight into the various phases of human sexuality and natural desires in the past 6,000 years of China’s sexual history.
The exhibition comprises various categories including the evolution of sex, the worship of sex, erotica, sexual health, sex and religion, sexual oppression of women, sex accessories, and marriage customs.

Miniature erotic figurines like these are among the 3,700 pieces of artworks featured in the museum.

Here’s a piece of artistic painting depicting Chinese sexuality and erotica.

Over the years, sexual attitudes towards sex have become more liberal in China but the people still have a lot to learn.
Loveland (Seoul, South Korea)
Loveland in Jeju, Seoul (South Korea) was put up by 20 artists in 2002. The outdoor sculpture theme park was opened on 16 November 2004. It showcases 140 art pieces created by graduates from the Hongik University in Seoul. The focus of the park is based on the ‘sex’ theme and it consists of sexually-oriented and erotic works of art. Each month, there will be an additional featured exhibition by various Korean artists.
The theme park features a range of sculptures and statues in the various stages of human sexuality, with a certain degree of humorous elements in a number of them. All the art pieces have been stylishly crafted with skill and precision. There are also photographs depicting various sexual activities, as well as displays of sexual props such as massage devices.

This is indeed an artistic and sexy sculpture! If only a human can pose like this…if there is a competition, I will definitely vote for it…

Erotic art sculptures like these (and many more) can be found all around the theme park. They are sure to trigger your senses

All the art pieces have been stylishly crafted with skill and precision. Be sure to visit this park when you are in South Korea.
Asia Eros Museum (Seoul, South Korea)
The Asia Eros Museum in Seoul, South Korea displays more than 300 exhibits that are a few hundred years old. The exhibits, comprising erotic paintings, sculptures, carvings and prints, are from Korea and around the world, and dates back to the stone age to recent times.
The museum aims to show how sex has been expressed and recognised through the historical remains of the various sexual cultures in Asia, as well as provides a valuable insight into the religious and philosophical perspective of each culture. Some of the items on display are coins, mirrors, plates, tiny Chinese shoes and naked photographs of women.

Featuring exhibits from around the world, this art piece depicts Indian erotica that is famous across Asia.
Hihokan (Japan)
Sex museums in Japan are called Hihokan, which means ‘House of Hidden Treasures’. They are located near Japan’s hot spring resorts in towns such as Sapporo, Atami and Beppu. Such museums, devoted mainly to sex, are popular with tourists and young couples.
Hihokan first became popular in 1971. They are still around today – some of them have remained practically unchanged for more than 30 years. Most of them display human mannequins in various sexual engagements.

This Japanese beauty, striking an erotic pose, has definitely made heads turn.

Displays on erotic art, human mannequins (such as this) and historical sexual aids aim to document the history of erotica in Japan.
Antarang (Mumbai, India)
Antarang (meaning intimate in Hindi) is a museum which aims to raise the understanding of sex and the awareness of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It houses nude statues, models of ancient sex goddesses from 1500-1000 BC, illustrations of a red light district in Mumbai and models of the human anatomy.
Verses from Kama Sutra (the ancient Indian text on sex) can be found on the walls of the museum. A section of the museum is focused on educating the public about the dangers of Aids. The Warli painting style, which is used to relate folk stories between men and women, is another highlight of the museum.

Here is a painting of an Indian couple in a passionate embrace. It takes skill to master the art of love.

The Antarang is focused on the rich heritage of erotic art and sexual history.
Be sure to visit the sex museums when you are in these Asian countries…you will be surprised!

My only real complaint is that only woman apparently is considered bueatiful enough to be a sexual figure. Where are the men? I mean, penises (Peni?) are important too, aren’t they?
I just find the whole thing a bit one sided. It’s very open and advanced thinking, but I don’t feel it’s broad enough, and seems a tad bit sexist when everything is thought through.
