After Care for Tongue Piercing
Healing time and after care for a tongue piercing.
Tongue piercing takes between 60 to 90 to fully heal. It is almost impossible to develop an infection because the mouth contains enzymes that kill bacteria. Over use of mouthwash can destroy these enzymes turning your tongue green or brown. If this happens reduce the amount of mouthwash you use or add water to your mouth wash. Your tongue will be swollen and sore after getting pierced increasing for the next few days. During that time your tongue will be uncoordinated and making eating and talking more difficult. 3 to 5 days later the swelling should lessen.
Do not be alarmed if you experience one or more of the following problems, they will go away when your tongue is fully healed:
- Swollen salivary glands, located under your chin
- Taste buds may become tender, you may feel a tingling sensation
- A depression on your tongue where the ball of your jewelry rests
- A white discharge coming from the piercing
Daily Care
Rinse your mouth 3 times daily with a disinfectant, such as Biotine or Cepacol. A mixture of 1 tablespoon sea salt and 1 cup of water after eating or smoking, is preferred over mouthwash. Use a soft toothbrush to remove plaque from your jewelry. With clean hands make sure your barbell is screwed on tight. Wait minimum of 30 days before changing to a shorter barbell stem.
Do NOT use peroxide or alcohol on the piercing as they are very astringent and can damage the wound.Do NOT remove the jewel during the healing phase because you may lose the piercing.
