How to Choose Dance Classes in London, UK

The best dance schools in London. What to look out for. Classes for adults and children.

In London, as in any large city, there is a multidute of various dance schools. Regardless of your dance taste, style, level and money you will have planty of choice. This article is your guide to finding classes and schools that suite you best.

First of all- Dance styles!

  • Pineapple Dance Studios is located in Central London in Covent Garden. This school offers the largest number of classes and styles. From Ballet (Classical and Moder) to Jazz (Classical, Contemporary, Commercial, Street, Funky, etc.) to Contemporary Technique, Modern, and Musical Theater. However, what I would say is their biggest advantage is that there around 15-20 classes a day!!! Different styles and level. Each technique runs several times a day. They also have many different teachers so there is plenty to choose from. However, the Pineapple is a relatively expensive school taking into account that class last only 1 hour (with some exception, e.g. Advanced ballet- 1.5h). Also another setback is large class sizes.
  • DanceWorks is also located in Central London, off Bond Street, just outside Selfridges. This school runs a great variety of classes for different styles and levels.  Around 15 classes a day. Interesting mixes of styles, i.e. Sunday Fleva, Boogie Jazz, Latin Jazz. For ballet fans, DanceWorks runs Ballet Classes with many internationally acclaimed dancers. On the downside, studios are quite small and at times get very crowded. On the other hand, with Sunday Day Membership costing only 2.50 and classes 1.5h, I would rate this school as one of the best in London.
  • The Place is a Contemporary Dance School. It runs evening classes for adults from Monday to Saturday 6:30-8:00. They have Ballet, Contemporary Technique, Contemporary Jazz, and Project classes. Levels range from Introductory to Advanced (4 levels). The greatest advantage of this school is the size of classes and nice, big studios. In terms of class sizes, they are relatively small (comparing to Dance Works or Pineapple) because most people buy Enrollment or Carnet Membership as this options prove much cheaper than paying for single drop-in entrance. Also for those who buy membership, this school offers the best value for money. Classes run by international dancers and famous teachers.
  • Central School Of Ballet offers classes in Ballet, Contemporary Technique, Jazz, and Historical Dance. Level is high. Even Classes for beginners seem to be quite advanced. Class sizes are quite big but studios are spatious. Classes run only on a drop-in basis and single class costs 8 pounds.
