Cinema 4D, shot glass tutorial

Cinema 4D, shot glass tutorial

A short tutorial on how to model a shot drinking glass in cinema 4d and also how to create the texture for the glass, very useful

This is a simple tutorial to help you learn two tools in cinema 4D; you will learn how to use the spline tool and the nurbs lathe tool.

We are going to begin with the view port we should be looking at 4 views, perspective, front, top and right we will be using the right view port for this to begin with. If you do not see all four view ports click your middle mouse button (the wheel) to see all four views.

Now click in the right view port to create a blue box around the view port so that we know that the view port is selected, now we need to use the spline tool, the first step is to go to the top menu and select objects > create splines > bezier.

We will be using the bezier spline because this one creates hard corners and not smooth corners which we will need.

Right now we have the bezier spline selected and we are still in the right view port, to begin with we need to click in the first place that we need the first dot. We will click any where you want.

The shape of the object

This is the shape of the object that we need to create the object should have 6 points, we need this shape because when we use the lathe it will create the glass shape we need. The glass we will be creating will be a shot glass normally associated with whisky.

Right now we have the shape created in the screen, also if you look at the top right hard section of the screen you will see the object spline, this is the object manager.

Now go back to objects and go objects > nurbs > lathe, this lathe will be the shape we will use for the glass, what we do is in the object manager we select the spline and left mouse button click and drag and drop it into the lathe ( a down arrow will appear ). With this done you should see a solid object appear in your perspective view.

Now if you’re not happy with the shape of our glass in the object manager select the spline and in the left hand tool bar going down the screen theres a image of several dots with some a different colour from the others, this is the point tool select this and you can select on the points we created in the spline and move them around this is useful to get the shape of the glass you want!

We now have a solid shape which is no good for us we need the object to be see through so lets create a texture, other guides tell you to use a pre created one but I believe its best to make your won as it will help you understand what you are doing.

The texture editor is located in the bottom left corner click file and then click new material, this will now create a material you can see in the texture editor, now in the right hand section of the screen you can see the texture and all its information.

Now click the basic tab and turn on transparency and reflections this will begin to help us create the texture we will use, now click colour and choose a nice very pale blue this is the colour we will use for the glass. Now the next step is to choose the transparency tab here you will also choose a light blue colour and then the reflectivity tab and set dispersion to about 4% this will give it a reflectivity but not to great.

Now click the lathe NURBS in the object manager and then right click on the texture and select apply, there we have it one shot glass with texture, hope this was useful and gave you some good ideas!
