Growth on Black Background
Jean Arp created this unique white sculpture in the late 1930’s known as "Growth".
“Growth” On Black Backgound

According to Wikipedia (Dec 2008), Jean Arp was a German-French sculptor, painter, poet and abstract artist” (pg. 1). Jean Arp created the white marble sculpture known as Growth in the late 1930s.
I would expect the sculpture to be cold to my touch due to that marble is smooth to the touch and normally feels cool. This goes against the color wheel as white is a warm color. However, sense the picture of Arp’s sculpture is in black and white, we don’t know the true color.
The sculpture requires more careful placement of lightening because if the light is placed just right a good critic may be able to determine what shape Arp’s sculpture is about. “But is it human, animal, or vegetable growth, male or female” (Humanities 115)? Abstract sculptures use light to play on textural qualities. “Abstract sculptures, on the other hand, generally restrict themselves to a minimal range of color, line, and textural qualities and emphasize light not only to play on these qualities, but also brings out the inherence of these qualities in things” (Humanities 118).

Wow! Amazing what the human mind can imagine, isn’t it…
Can’t say that I particularly like or dislike the sculpture, but I DO like your article about it.
Thanks, Jax

What an interesting object to look at – it takes on more and more recognisable shapes the longer I look at it, whilst still not producing a concrete definition of what it is in my mind. Thanks!

Rynn,
This is exactly what drew me to writing about this sculpture. As you said it seems to take on various shapes without a concrete definition. Thank you for your insight and kind comment.
Blessings,
Chris
