Advice: I Want to be an Actor

Advice: I Want to be an Actor

Advice for aspiring actors who don’t know where to start.

There are lots of people in the world today, who have a love for acting, whether they do it as a hobby or want to turn it into a career. Perhaps you’re a teenager like me who only just decided that’s what you want to dedicate your life to. But you have no clue where to begin or how to go about doing it. Sound right?

Here are a few basic tips and ideas on getting started in the acting world:

1. Read plays. Read classic literature. Having a good knowlegde of classics and paying attention in your English classes is going to help a lot. Most likely when you are being interviewed for an acting school, they will ask you questions about plays and novels. Which are your favourites, what caught your attention to read them, why you think something happened in a certain play/novel. So you need to know your basics! And even if you decide not to apply at acting school, it will help you a lot to understand different plays.

2. Get experience. In all different types of things. Try your best to get involved with dancing, singing, music, voice training, martial arts, sports, languages and basic ACTING. The more experience you have, the better it will look on your CV/resume and the easier you will find it if you are casted for something. So even if you can’t afford any one-on-one classes or personal trainer, get involved at school and community things. Even splash out some of your pocket money on classes and teach yourself.

3. Get involved in as many plays as possible. You may not be interested in theatre, but casting directors tend to look for examples of actors’ works…and where else are you going to get it? Almost everyone starts with theatre, so suck it up and go for it! TV acting might seem easier and more glamourous, but you need your basic knowledge just like all the other actors. Even a couple of school plays before you move out count as something, so people know you’ve acted before. And school plays are your best opportunities to get chosen after auditioning.

Good luck to all you aspiring actors! If you have any more questions, please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you ASAP.
