Anatomy of the Martin Minute

Anatomy of the Martin Minute

The process behind developing a comedy skit.

When you walk in on a second improvisational comedy skit you might be too content and rely on what you had done before. The key to continued success would be to utilize your experience without resting back on your laurels.

So after having done one skit under a series called the Martin Minute, I knew that I might at most come in with the same outfit, akin to Jackie Gleason wearing his bar man outfit on his show or Red Skelton wearing his classic brown suit when he would do his famed liquor stunt. I already had a look apart form trendsetters and so that did not take much effort. I knew that if I were going to do physical comedy the movement would have to be upbeat with the camera catching me in different positions according to the scenario.

The first skit on flying a plain was inspired by the late Red Skelton and his appearance at the beginning of a comedy film on the first airplane pilots. There the template I had was most abstract, I could use a prop and then get into the role of pretending to be anything that had to do with a flying plane.

That said when doing a following skit on trains I had to keep in mind that it was too easy for me to clutter the skit with props or come across as a junior kid show host. At first a set of tracks was laid out but because it was too schematic for something involving a burst of energy such as I demonstrated on the plane skit, I had to incorporate some diverse physicality you would not expect for a little kid playing with his toy train. The result is an original comic piece on a minimal set that other comics can be inspired by.
