Second City Toronto a Barrel of Laughs with 64th Revue
Shut Up and Show Us Your Tweets is the legendary Toronto theatre’s 64th revue, and a great event to attend.
I can honestly say that the Toronto arm of the Second City Theatre has never let me down. I’ve seen a couple of their shows, and each time I’ve found myself laughing until my ears hurt. The legendary stage show, of which many alumni have moved on to critical and commercial acclaim, recently previewed its 64th revue titled, Shut Up and Show Us Your Tweets.
Set amidst the recent popularity of Twitter, the social media and communication theme is merely a back drop to the amount of content covered throughout the two hour stage show. As always, Canadian culture is marred with quick sketches poking fun at politics, people, and patriotism. No stone is left unturned.
Audience participation is a must; the legendary improv troupe relies on the reactions and suggestions of the audience, creating a participatory comedy experience unlike your usual stand up act.
Tucked away in Toronto’s bustling night club district, the theatre is a great event for anybody. If you’re coming into the city as a tourist or a regional visitor, your destined to enjoy a great time over drinks and food. If you’re a local Torontonian, it’s a great reason to reaffirm your belief in the quality talent that Canada produces.
The stage show’s latest performance is probably the most politically charged, taking stabs at McGuinty, Harper and even Toronto Mayor David Miller. The tumultuous health care debate in the United States is hilariously parodied in a mock “town hall meeting”. Watch as the cast complains and revolts through popular technology in order to get their voices heard.
With a new show also comes new cast members. Regardless of their respective resumes, the cast gels well; playing off each other and the crowd to develop great comedy right in front of your eyes.
For tickets and theatre details, you can visit the Toronto stage show’s site. There are some great group and student rates available. Great value and a great performance, the Second City Toronto Theatre is definitely something worth seeing whether you’re visiting Toronto or looking for a good night out.
