The Tools of a Starting Magician

The Tools of a Starting Magician

For those who are interested in magic, you must at least have the following tools to develop your skills.

If one would like to become a magician I suggest that you have these things in your arsenal. A good magician should not only be good with one kind of trick. He must be able to at least understand how magical effects are done through various tricks; also if a magician only knows one type of tricks like card tricks, he would become a very boring magician. If you’re really interested in becoming a good magician, I recommend that you have these things so that your interest in magic would be developed into a first class skill.

Magic Books

There are a lot of magic books out there in the market, some could be purchased online and others could be bought at a local bookstore. If you are really serious about becoming a magician, I suggest that you get a book that is exclusively sold from a magic shop and not books that are for everyone from a local bookstore. Usually because the cooks about magic that could be found in a local bookstore lacks detail compared to a book that could be found in a magic shop. Simply because books that are not found exclusively in magic shops contain a lot of tricks that are known to the general public.

Here are some titles that I would recommend

  • Modern Magic (Hoffman)
  • Modern Coin Magic (JB Bobo)
  • Modern Card Manipulation (Hugard)

These three books actually not only precise instructions on how to do the trick but also on how should it be presented.

Props

There are a lot of magic props that are available in the market right now but if you are a beginner I suggest you get a magic kit so that you could save on money at the same time you will be exposed to other numerous tricks that you could do.

Your kit should at least include the following:

  • An instructional book or video
  • A deck of playing cards
  • A cups and balls set
  • Some silks or handkerchiefs
  • A wand
  • Metal Linking Rings
  • Multiplying Balls

These props are actually good for beginners because they are easy to do. Also if you at least have these basic props, you would begin to understand more how magic is and soon you would be able to create your own tricks.

Practice

This is what most beginner magicians forget. Most beginners would be usually very excited to perform a trick that they have just learned minutes ago. The result is a half-baked trick and usually half-baked tricks often turn into disasters because not only you failed on your performance but also you have exposed your secret. Just remember after you have studied the trick practice it in front of a mirror at least 30 minutes everyday for at least a month before showing it to a large audience. Surely a well practiced trick would awe your audiences and would give you of course a well deserved applause.

Believe

This is the most important tool in a magician’s arsenal. Just believe in your trick and don’t worry too much on its technical aspects. If you worry too much it would be obvious that you’re doing something and it would lead to the failure of a trick. If you’re doing a mind reading trick believe that you could really read their minds. If you’re making a coin vanish believe that the coin has really vanished in your hand. Simply put it this way no audience would believe a magician who doesn’t even believe in his own magic.

I hope these tips were able to help you in your journey into becoming a good if not the best magician there is. Stay magical and one last thing always keep your magic secrets so that the secrets will keep you in return.
