A description of a photograph.

This photograph, by Karl Blossfeldt, entitled “Monkshood”, caught my eye because of it’s interesting perspective. This image was made between 1900 and 1930. It looks like a woman shielding herself from the sun, although the image is actually that of a plant. The darker bark or plant materiel seems to be a skirt around the woman’s waist. The two outer stems appear to be arms, while the center looks like a head.
The photo is centered and draws the eye toward the middle, while the surrounding space is unoccupied. It gives a false sense of symmetry, and in an almost surreal way, it seems as if the flower is springing to life for the photographer who took it.
At first glance, it looks like a woman. The background gives an air of majestical uncertainty. The curves and lighting seem to give it a sense of motion, and a life of it’s own. The photograph evokes an appreciation of nature as well as captures the eye and the mind, to leave you thinking about the marvelous patterns in nature.
