Urban Destruction

Urban Destruction

The usual end for abandoned buildings.

Many years ago, The Julia Farr Centre was the primary caring facility for the physically and mentally handicapped in our city. (Adelaide, South Australia)

In a fit of seeming to care for those less fortunate, the government of the day decided that smaller accommodation in home units was more acceptable. Needless to say, many of the patients – some of whom suffered from schitzophrenia and bi-polar disorder – began to neglect their medication because the day-to-day care was no longer there. Our society is still paying for this short-sighted attempt to save money.

The building has since been occupied by a succession of squatters, and attacked many times by mindless vandals until it is in the state you see it now – completely unusable and the haunt (pun intended!) of numerous ghosts, numerous squatters, teenage partygoers and drug users. This is partly due to the interminable squabbles between the owners and those who want to develop the site.

I’ve tweaked my picture on Paint Shop Pro (I can’t afford Photoshop) using the “Infrared” script.

For more information of Julia Farr, who she was; and the history of the building, just “Google” “Julia Farr Centre Adelaide”.
