The Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre is a famous theatre that housed many famous plays such as Macbeth. Here are some information on this theatre and the different parts/uses of the Globe Theatre.

The Globe Theatre was created in the 16th century.

There were 3 different types of seats.

-Most expensive cost 6 pence AKA the Lords’ rooms.

-2nd most expensive cost 3 pence AKA Gentlemen’s rooms

-Then there was the 2 pence AKA Gallery or two-penny rooms

-The cheapest seat cost 1 penny (took the most space) were the Groundlings who      stood

The stage did not include any scenery. It also had very few props.

The most decorative part of the stage was the Heaven which was above the stage. The Heaven included a trap door which allowed people to be dropped down or be pulled up (mostly for special effects).

There is also a trap door on the stage it self which is suppose to represent Hell. An actor falling into the hole would be falling into the bottomless pit of hell.

Above the stage to the left was the musician’s room. This part of the stage would play music to make the play more enjoyable. To the right of it were the Lords’ rooms which had the best view of the play. People who sat here wanted to have the best view and let others see their rank in society.

Above the musician’s room and the Lords’ room was a hut which contained a cannon which shot blanks (special effects).

The stage wall was the background of the plays. They always looked the same no matter what play it was because it would cost too much to paint it over for each play. The stage wall was also known as the “Frons Scenae”.

Behind the stage included the dressing room/tiring house. The tiring house was a place for the actors to relax.

On the top of Globe Theatre, there was a flag. When it was raised, it meant that a play was going on. Different colored flags meant different colored plays.

The Globe Theatre was built with a thatched roof. The use of this material made it very easy to burn down. In 1613, the cannon used for special effects malfunctioned and started a fire igniting the roof almost instantly. It was then rebuilt 1 year later known as Globe 2. Then over time, it probably rotted away, but in the 20th century archeologist discovered the remains of the Rose and Globe Theatre. As a result, it was then again rebuilt. Looking like the Globe Theatre.
