The Theater Helps

Since I was a Theater Arts major before active duty in the Marines being able to properly get into character has helped me in may ways. Here is just a set of examples.

While in college majoring in Theater Arts every potential star actor or actress is taught how to get into character. One of the methods instructed is to do some back stage yoga while visualizing an animal.

That yoga is done by standing with your hands behind your head and slowly bending down foreword. You must to that while breathing deeply and when your head gets level with the floor you drop your hands down to tough it. 

None of these forms of yoga should ever be done while visualizing a human being. You must pick out an animal that tends to act naturally how the character you are playing is supposed to behave. Your character will start tom perceive things just like that animal would. That way you can respond to any of the lines spoken just like your are supposed to.

This kind of training can help any Marine keep out of trouble. It helped me stay on active duty for another two years after that head injury which caused a three month long coma. After being released from the hospital I could visualize as I approached formation every morning.

After one gets off stage and needs to stay employed it really helps them to get into the right character whenever they approach their boss. That helped me when I got into long haul trucking. I could become a very trustworthy driver whenever I went into the yard office and had to talk to a dispatcher. I’d just visualize an animal while crossing the parking lot.

This is helping me now that I’ve reached fifty and am trying to stay in good shape. It cracks me up as I jog past people because they probably are thinking I’m a crazy gray headed old man. I can visualize some animal like a mule to get some adrenalin. It’s just like being on stage when others watch me jog by. That desire to be a star might just be what keeps me from loosing my breath.
