Top 10 Musicals and Plays of 2008

Ticket sales for musicals and plays dropped slightly in 2008, so who managed to get the most visitors?

I am not going to lie and say I see musicals a lot, but I do love watching them from time to time; especially the classics, that never seem to get old. However, with the old classics are the new crops of new musicals. Here are the top 10 from 2008:

  1. Billy Elliot
  2. Hair
  3. All My Sons
  4. The Visit
  5. Black Watch
  6. Reasons to Be Pretty
  7. The Little Mermaid
  8. Blasted
  9. South Pacific
  10. Farragut North

The new plays seem to be beating out the old classics like:

  • Oklahoma
  • Annie
  • Rent
  • Phantom of the Opera

I am sure a lot of you can name even more than I can, there are so many and to limit a list to 10 is almost a crime. With the new crop of plays that have sprouted from movies and television, one can only wonder what movie or television show will become the next musical or play. Here are a few that I think would be a bad idea for anyone to use (if you have ever watched them, you know why):

  • Cops (I can’t even imagine that one)
  • CSI (any of them) – may work as a play, but not a musical
  • Stargate Atlantis
  • Flashpoint – good play material, but not musical
  •  Heroes (because of the many powers, would be difficult to arrange)

Television shows that I think could make it as a musical or play would be:

  • The Office (play/musical)
  • Ghost Whisperer (play/musical)
  • Chuck (play, but fight scenes could have music in background)
  • The Mentalist (play)
  • Criminal Minds (play)
  • Law & Order (any of them/ play)
  • Medium (play/musical)
  • American Idol (play/musical – pretty much already is, right?)

I bet all of you can make a better list of shows that could be made into musicals or plays. Well, write them up, would love to hear others opinions on this.
