Art Meets Technology: 10 Works of Art Inspired by Popular Video Games

Who says video games can’t be sophisticated? From a sculpture of Pacman’s skeleton to a human version of Tetris, this article will cover some of the craziest works of art inspired by our favorite video games.

  1. Human Tetris video: This short animated film of Tetris performed by humans was directed by Swiss artist Guillaume Reymond and is part of his project titled GAME OVER. In addition to Tetris, Reymond also filmed a human version of Space Invaders, Pole Position and Pong. Don’t ask me why he did it, I’m just glad he did!
  2. Link painting (Legend of Zelda): You’ve never seen Link like this before! This painting by artist ‘Jimiyo’ combines pixel shaped forms with natural textures and traditional figures. The result? A very surreal yet intriguing image. It kind of reminds me of something you might see in a dream after a long night of Zelda game play. However, if your dreams really are turning out like this, it might be time to give Link the day off. Maybe.

  4. Niko Bellic (Grand Theft Auto IV): This image was created for Official PlayStation Magazine UK by an artist who goes by ‘pixeloo’. The image was created using various photo altering software (I’m guessing photo shop) and is made to present GTA IV’s Niko in a realistic form while also maintaining his animated characteristics. Sure, it might have been easier to just hire a model and dress him as Niko but I’m guessing the results of that strategy wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun to look at.

  6. Turnip Murder (Super Mario Brothers 2): This computer generated image was created by artist Winona Nelson and was inspired by Super Mario Brothers 2. In her Artist’s Comments section of her web page she states ”…I just always loved that your weapons in Mario Bros. 2 were vegetables.”

  8. Zombie sculpture (Resident Evil): A bust has never looked so good yet so horrific at the same time. This sculpture was created by artist ‘wigz411′ using Sculpey and hobby paints of all things. I came across this little gem while surfing a forum dedicated to Resident Evil fan art and I have to say, this is probably the best ‘fan art’ I’ve ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes on. I can only hope that I’ll see more of wigz411’s work in the future.

  10. Master Chief Wax Figure (Halo): I first caught a glimpse of the Master Chief wax statue while surfing a friends facebook photos. Her caption for this epic accomplishment?  ‘Some space dude’. Needless to say, we aren’t friends anymore. Just kidding. But I did belt out some genuinely disgusted ‘Ugh!’s at my computer screen. Anyhoo, this Master Cheif statue stands at 7′2”, weighs 275 pounds and is actually made of clay…not wax. It’s currently housed in Madame Tussaud’s wax museum in Vegas and was the first video game character to be immortalized by Madame Tussaud’s museum.

  12. Pacman Skeleton (Pacman): This sculpture of Pacman’s skeleton is probably the weirdest item on the list by far. It was created by artist Le Gentil Garçon and paleontologist François Escuilié (you know, in case someone wanted to dispute the accuracy of the Pacman skull.). Once you get over the initial creepiness, it’s actually a pretty fascinating piece to examine. The tail is definitely my favorite part!

  14. Red Cylone (Streetfighter):In honor of the Streetfighter movie, gallery and art store, Nucleus devoted an entire exhibit to Streetfighter art. There were numerous pieces to choose from but I enjoyed this Titian styled painting of Red Cyclone the best. It’s currently selling for $1,200 so get it while it’s hot!

  16. Big Daddy Etch a Sketch (Bioshock): Amazingly, this piece was done on your every day Etch a Sketch by the Etch-A-Sketchist. This artist has done other amazing works on the Etch a Sketch (i.e. GTA cover art, Jabba the Hut, Halo 3) but this one has been one of the most critically acclaimed. It kinda puts the simple city scapes I made on my little Etch a Sketch to shame.

  18. Bento (Super Smash Brothers Brawl): This last piece is technically more of a lunch than an art work but it’s so amazing that I just had to share it! First, a bento is a single serving lunch common in the Japanese tradition. Typically the lunch includes rice, meat and vegetables however, what separates the bento from your everyday lunch is the artistic arrangement of the food (see below for example). They say this type of lunch helps encourage kids to eat their vegetables and I have to admit, if my lunch had looked like this when I was a kid, I’d happily gobble it down too!
