Earth and Green on Blue Canvas

Earth and Green on Blue Canvas

Mark Rothko was an artist I discovered while studying an arts and humanities class. I was particularly intrigued by his Earth and Green painting and needed to share my personal view.

Rothko’s painting is dominated by a cool color. Green is considered a cool color in the color wheel. “Cool colors tend to be recessive, dominated by blue, green, and black” (Humanities 87).

Rothko’s Earth Greens can be perceived as a three dimensional object thus portraying more space on the canvas then there actually is. This adds depth more than taken up width. “And when shapes suggest mass- three dimensional solids- depth is inevitably seen” (Humanities 91).

Rothko has abstracted sensa, especially colors, from objects or things. Earth and grass and sky are not “in” Rothko’s painting” (Humanities 116).

Ruby,
My art history class was the most challenging class I have ever had because sometimes it is difficult to think in the abstract.
I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Darlene,
If you type in Mark Rothko in the Google search you will find that he has many different abstract painted canvas pieces. Some quite strange, but that is just my opinion.
God Bless,
Chris

Thank you Eddiego65! Art writing is fairly new to me. I thought I would give writing in a new genre a try. Someday I hope to learn basic poetry. I promise to take some time soon to check out more of your work. I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving.
God Bless,
Chris

I adore art, but this one is difficult for me, for I am colorblind…lol! But an interesting article nonetheless.

Fantastic, I really like his work. He has been influential in Australian art too. Believe it or not. I love his work and always spent my years looking at his work.

He is my favourite artist. Thanks for the ideas and good choice. j

I like the article, but once again, I don’t have a lot to say about this piece. I like a little more substance than simply shapes on a canvas. I’m not even sure I like the artist’s color choices…
