Styrofoam is a popular material for sculpting initial maquettes for casting. It is also used for small sculptures, scale models or armatures to build onto. Its ability to adhere to itself and remain lightweight makes it a common choice among artists and craft makers. It is a durable material that also can be shaved down or carved to form unique shapes. There are a variety of glues that can be used on Styrofoam, though not all glues will work without eating through the material.

Brush off any pieces of Styrofoam sticking out of the surface that will be glued. Make sure it is completely dry and dust-free.

Spread a thin layer of white glue, wood glue or 3M spray adhesive on both ends of the Styrofoam that you wish to glue together.

Insert toothpicks halfway into one side of the Styrofoam that you will be attaching. Break down toothpicks to smaller pieces if you are gluing two small pieces together so they never stab through the surface of the Styrofoam.

When the glue becomes tacky, carefully press the other half of the Styrofoam onto the toothpicks until the two glued surfaces are touching.

Allow the glue to dry up to 24 hours before altering the Styrofoam.
