Promote Creativity in Your Design Process
Creativity can be difficult to find at times but is always needed in any design project. Whether you are having difficulty thinking creatively for a specific project such as a poster printing design or are trying to develop creative thinking habits, there are steps you can follow to help train yourself to think creatively. Here are some suggestions for promoting creativity in your design process and everyday life.
Environment
The space in which you do your best creative thinking is one of the first things you should identify. Environment is a powerful influence on frame of mind and the free flow of ideas. Some people find they come up with their best ideas while in motion. This might mean going for a jog or a walk down the hall. Others find that the atmosphere of their office is a greater influence on creative thinking. Set it up with the lighting, cozy chair, décor, or music that best promotes your creativity. Certain photos, paintings, music, or scents might be your creative muse.
Notes
Creative ideas may happen at any time. Many times we forget an idea we know was the big one because we did not write it down. Make it a habit to take notes any time or place, or on a daily basis. Keep a notebook handy at your bedside since inspiration often strikes in the quiet before sleep or after waking. Record ideas. They do not have to be fully formed plans or designs; perhaps seeing a design element in a poster sparks an idea that you can use later. Sketch, doodle, or write it down and keep a file that you add to often and peruse frequently.
Direction
Creative thinking should have a goal. Starting a project such as a logo or poster printing design project can be intimidating without narrowing down the direction you need to pursue. As you get into your environment with your notebook handy, have a goal in mind to direct your thoughts in the right direction. Identify your goal by jotting it down, then as thoughts or ideas come weigh them against your goal. If they do not move you in the direction to reach your goal, push them aside. If it is an effective thought for reaching your goal, jot it down. Refer to your goal frequently to keep yourself on track. If you need to, take a break to clear your head and come back refreshed.
Practice
To develop a habit of creative thinking, challenge yourself with regular creativity building exercises. Explore problem solving for imaginary problems, or problems you have already solved. Think “alternate ending” like with a movie: what other ways could I have solved this design dilemma? How would I have designed that poster printing campaign? Add these ideas and exercises to your file for future reference. Regular practice will help make creative thinking part of your normal thought process.
