The World’s Most Unique Public Art Masterpieces

Fourteen large and peculiar public art installations from around the world.

Here are some architectural masterpieces created by famous artists that can be seen on display on public places from around the world. Most of them are located on public squares.

1. Double ova

This architectural masterpiece called “Double Ova” is created by Henry Moore and was unveiled in 1977. It is situated in Connaught Place, a square near Jardine House. It was formerly known as Connaught Center located in Hong Kong. This statue is donated by Hong Kong Land and is dedicated to Vernon Roberts.

2. The Egg

The Egg, which was designed by Wallace Harrison, is a building constructed between 1966 and 1978. It is an amphitheater – a performing arts venue in Albany, New York that looks like an egg. Peter Steinborn is the engineer responsible for the application of the design, along with any changes to it. This unique building is situated in the northeast corner of the Empire State Plaza. Architecturally, there are no other known buildings like The Egg in the world.

3. The Picasso

Daley Plaza is home to an untitled Cor-ten steel 50-foot or 15 meter sculpture by Pablo Picasso which is usually called “The Picasso”. This controversial Chicago landmark because of its abstract form was completed in 1967 as a gift to the City of Chicago from the artist.

4. The Eclipse

This unique architectural masterpiece is created by Charles O. Perry in San Francisco, California. He created the “Eclipse” for the Hyatt Regency at Embarcadero in San Francisco in 1973 portraying his many dimensions who ponder the wonderful mysteries of the universe.

5. Musical Fountain

This fountain is different from ordinary fountains. It is actually a “musical fountain”, a type of animated fountain for entertainment purposes that creates an aesthetic design and sometimes a three-dimensional image. This amazingly beautiful musical fountain which was built in 1994 is located in Xinghai Square, or Xinghai Plaza, a city square in Dalian, China. It has a total area is 45,000 sq m. Xinghai literally means “the Sea of Stars”.

6. Azadi Tower

The Azadi Tower or Freedom Tower, which was built in 1971, is the symbol of Tehran, Iran. The tower marks the entrance to the city and is regarded as the “Gateway into Iran”. It was built to commemoration the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. It is 50 meters or 148 feet tall and is completely clad in cut marble.

7. St George Monument

There are numerous columns built in the different part of the world and one distinct column which was built recently is the Freedom Monument, commonly known as St. George Statue. It is a memorial located in Tbilisi, Georgia, dedicated to the freedom and independence of the Georgian nation. This architectural piece was unveiled in 2006 on the central square of the city. It is a 44-meter or equivalent to 144 ft high monument made of granite and gold. The 9-meter (30 ft) high St. George Statue of bronze and covered with gold is a gift to the city from Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli.

8. The Fountain

This amazingly unique masterpiece is located in Dizengoff Square, a public square in Tel Aviv, Israel. It is named for the wife of Tel Aviv’s first mayor, Meir Dizengoff. It is located 300 meters from the Dizengoff Center.

9. Perseus

Benvenuto Cellini is one of Italy’s greatest sculptors and one of his most famous masterpieces is the statue Perseus with the Head of Medusa which is on display in The Loggia dei Lanzi gallery on the edge of the Piazza della Signoria.

10. Rameses Obelisk

Majority of the most notable Egyptian obelisks where transported anywhere else in the world and one of which is the Obelisk of Rameses II from Heliopolis. It stands now in the center of Piazza del Popolo, a square in Rome, Italy.

11. Spirit & Enterprise

This distinctively unique architectural piece named Spirit & Enterprise is designed by Tom Lomax. It is on public display at Centenary Square, a public square on Broad Street in Birmingham, England. It was named in 1989 in celebration of the centenary of Birmingham achieving city status (in 1889).

12. Monument to Aboriginal Veterans

This monument was built for the aboriginal war veterans located in Confederation Park, a downtown park in Ottawa, Canada.

13. Tyler Davidson Fountain

This beautiful statue located in Fountain Square in Cincinnati, Ohio is called the Tyler Davidson Fountain (nicknamed “The Lady”) and is regarded as the symbol of the city and one of the area’s most-visited attractions.

14. Weather Machine

Another public art installation, the Weather Machine, is consists of a tall metal column topped with a large silver-colored orb. This peculiar object is located in Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, Oregon. At noon each day, the following day’s weather is announced with a fanfare of trumpets, flashing lights, and a spray of mist. The orb opens to reveal one of the following: a golden sun, for a clear day; a great blue heron, to forecast a rainy day; an open-mouthed dragon, when storms are forecast. Light bulbs on the side of the machine are reminiscent of a mercury thermometer and light up progressively as the temperature increases.
