Patterns such as Argyle, Burberry plaid and hounds tooth are making a comeback this year, especially on sweaters and outerwear like coats, jackets and scarves.  Updated variations will be seen, such as the use of nontraditional colors and pattern sizes.  Funky and fun, these looks can be worn by almost anyone.  Also, for wool and trench coats, large, decorative buttons and embellishments will be popular, and I have even seen the wool Pea coat crossed with the military jacket quite successfully.  This year’s outerwear rules are that there are almost no rules at all.  Wear what makes you feel gorgeous and keeps you warm at the same time.

Studs are no longer just for the bedroom.  Now every woman can wear them proudly, giving the rest of the world a glimpse of her inner “Rocker chick”.  Think Billy Idol, punk rocker from the eighties as inspiration for this next trend.  Currently, studs and oversized grommets are being sported on black leather handbags, platform heels, knee high boots and leather belts…just to mention a few items.   Pair these up with a leather bomber jacket, and you’re ready to rock the night away.

The Peep-Toe Ankle Bootie is one of the cutest footwear trends that I’ve seen for this year.  Toe cleavage is in, as women show off their flawless French pedicures in vintage style peep toe shoes.  Animal prints on shoes and bags are hotter than ever, and large, bold chunky jewelry is being seen virtually everywhere. Snake print is back and more dangerously sexy than ever.  The latest twist to animal print is yet another reminder of the 80s:  expect to find leopard and zebra prints in bright jewel tones as well as in the traditional neutral shades.   Find it on everything from tights and bags to earrings and scarves. 

Remember Carrie Bradshaw’s Bridal Couture Vogue Shoot scene from the iconic “Sex and the City” movie?  Not only did it make many of us bride wannabe’s drool with desire, but it also satisfied our lust for pearls.  Ropes of pearls….as many as you dare to wear can be a strong, yet feminine statement and can be found at all price points.  H&M carries these fun, faux beads for around $20.00 per strand.  You can wear these pieces with everything from a stunning LBD to tailored office suit, instantly upping your style quotient into maximum overdrive.

Last year I purchased a black satin belted trench coat, and I love it so much, I wear it every chance I get.  A classic trench coat in a three quarter length looks equally smashing over evening wear or blue jeans alike.  And remember that Vancouver is known for its rain, so if you are here during the games, the coat is as practical as it is beautiful.

If you are lucky enough to be tall and lean, you can pull off skinny jeans and crop jacket and if you are an apple shape, baby doll knit dresses with matching hosiery and high heels can show off those sexy legs to their maximum capacity.   By keeping your winter colors monochromatic, you will add inches to your height, and subtract width from your waist.  I personally love combining neutrals and bolds, and the fall/winter season is perfect for that.  For a casual yet pulled-together look, try pairing dark rinse jeans, leather or corduroy jacket in camel and a striking jewel tone top underneath.  A neutral handbag and pointed-toe heels will complete the look and make you feel your best while out on the town.  As for the winter palette, teals, grays and plum wine shades are making a comeback, and can be matched perfectly with basic black and winter white alike. 

Another trend that is becoming quite visible here is akin to the flapper dresses of the 1920s.  I’ve seen fringed dresses, in bold look-at-me colors coming out just in time for Christmas.

The overall theme for this fall and winter are vintage looks with updated, fun and exciting variations.  With many of last year’s fashions still relevant, you can easily update your current winter wardrobe by adding some new chunky funky jewelry without breaking the bank.  Fashion can be fun without costing you a mint. Window shopping with a good friend to see what tickles your fancy is a wise idea if you’re not quite sure what suits your body shape and wallet.  Fashion is supposed to be fun, so no matter how you do it, always remember to enjoy yourself!  Happy Shopping, everyone!

In February 2009, London Fashion Week featured an Asian model in almost every show, with top designers like Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel and Louis Vuitton choosing Asian beauties over the previously prominent white models. This year will see the launch of GQ China and the increase of Vogue India’s print run to 50,000 copies per month, signalling a deeper awareness of the fashion industry in Asia than ever before.

High-street preferences are changing alongside catwalk attitudes, with shopping chain Next using 23-year-old Anglo-Asian model Kiren Modi as the face of its line next spring. Agencies believe that the 25th London Fashion Week this month will add momentum to the trend, with 26-year-old Asian model Lakshmi Menon tipped to be the next big thing of the fashion world.

Gavin Fernandes, a leading fashion photographer, believes that the growing market for Asian models is long overdue. “There is a popular misconception that Southern and Eastern Asian models are too bound to the principles of their parents,” he observes. “But those stereotypes have been broken down. Perhaps scouts just need to get better at spotting Asian talent.”

Despite an upsurge in the number of Asian models succeeding in modelling, the industry does not attract the same status as it does in the West. Major figures in the fashion industry have speculated that a vast number of Asian girls think of modelling as nothing more than a hobby, not wishing to pursue a career in the industry from a young age like their European counterparts.

Ashanti Omkar, former editor of popular Asian fashion and lifestyle magazine Henna, believes that change will happen, but only gradually. “Many young Asian girls don’t think of modelling as a career,” she says. “An increase in the number of Asian models is expected, but it will take time.”

Although the ‘fad’ of jean wearing remained, more and more companies were now around to take sales away from Levi’s. By the mid 80’s sales had decreased immensely, something had to be done to redress the issue. A marketing campaign was required and the one they chose worked beyond anyone’s wildest imagination. Sales rocketed as Levi’s started an ad campaign that was to capture the imagination of all. However, it wasn’t just the visual treat that captured the viewers imagination; it was the music that could be heard.

Initially taking old standard songs, such as Ben E Kings ‘Stand By Me’ and Percy Sledge’s ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’, it seemed that every song featured in a Levi ad was soon racing towards the top of the charts. As the 1990’s began a chance of pace was afoot. Instead of taking older songs, Levi’s started using new songs in their adverts. It was a risk to change the winning formula but it was a risk that seemed unfounded as the captive audience seemed to enjoy even more what they were hearing.

Below, we will have a look at the songs that were famously used in the Levi adverts of the 1990’s; famously used and somewhat made famous also as every single one of these was to find its way to the number one spot in the UK after appearing in the ad.

Steve Miller Band ‘ The Joker’

It was the dawn of a new decade. The 1990’s had just begun, it was to be a decade that in many respects echoed that of the 60’s. The Steve Miller Band had first recorded the song ‘the Joker’ way back in 1973 and had a massive US number one with it. In the UK however the band were not all that famous, having their biggest hit with ‘Abracadbra’ in the early 80’s and not much of note apart from that. All that was to change however when ‘the Joker’ was used in a Levi advert. On UK release it stormed its way to the top of the chart and spent an impressive 4 weeks at the top.

The Clash ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’

Another older song and yet another to reach the number one spot in the UK after being used in a Levi ad. The Clash were seen as leading lights of the punk movement and although their musical talent was never in doubt they seemed destined to never hit the top 10 in the UK with any of their releases. This song was originally released in 1982 and peaked at number 17. Yet 9 years later in 1991, after appearing in a Levi’s ad, this song rocketed to the top of the charts. It seemed that the record buying punters were falling ‘head over heels’ for a great advertising campaign.

Stiltskin ‘Inside’

There were many people who, although admitting the adverts were the main reason, argued that all the songs used were just older ones that were popular anyway. So it was with some shock (and delight no doubt from some corners) when this song came from nowhere. When this rock song was used in a Levi’s ad it captured the imagination of the listener, enough so that it was released. Stiltskin were an unheard of band before this and soon drifted back to becoming unheard of it but in this brief moment of time they had reached the number one spot in the UK.

Shaggy ‘Boombastic’

A relatively established star (having hit number one with the song ‘Oh Carolina’ in 1993), Shaggy was to be another musician to have song used in a Levi ad and to benefit from a number one hit in the UK. Levi’s, with their long running ad campaigns, had succeeded massively; the buying public were sending the music to number one and sales in the jeans were on the up. They could do no wrong.

Babylon Zoo ‘Spaceman’

Well they almost did do wrong with this one. Almost. It was 1996 when a new Levi’s ad came out and again the additional music was good. It would appear that they had gone down the route of dance music this time (an obvious move when one considers the differing styles previously used), the buying public were enthralled by the music which, to them, sounded like something from out of space. On release the record rocketed to number one but many people were left perplexed when, on first listening, the song descended quickly into a rock song. Although the start of the song was what had been in the advert, the rest was nothing like it. The listener felt like they had been duped but it was a feeling that wouldn’t last.

Mr Oizo ‘Flat Beat’

Perhaps lessons had been learned, so when the advert came out with this song on it, no one was in doubt that this was a dance song. Another song plucked from obscurity that rocketed to the top of the charts in the UK, the 1990’s ended as it had began for Levi jeans; music from their adverts sitting at the top of the charts and sales of their produce doing well.

The Rocker-inspired fashions for Fall will now include worn-out and torn denim pants, black blazer with silver metal studs, graphic t-shirts, pleather reptile-skin pumps, bangles with animal prints piled on the wrist, black and white hounds-tooth open-toe pumps, belt with silver metal studs, fedora, denim open-toe platform pumps with studded silver metal design, pleather black satchel, and black rose and black lace accessories to complete the look. Also, consider wearing a belt with a large decorative belt buckle, a graphic t-shirt with shiny sequins and gems, and a chain belt, a chain bracelet, a necklace with chains and matching earrings. Other clothes and accessories consist of a biker jacket, knee-high lace-up boots, metallic mini skirt and blazer in different colors, and a metallic clutch.

The Boho style includes paisley chiffon asymmetric-hem dress, western bootie, a chain charm bracelet with large chain links, open-toe pumps, double-strap studded belt that looks like a harness, pleather boots, belted cowboy boots, pleather flats, Native American tapestry print tote bag, and art deco accessories that look unique and antique. Since Bohemians tend to be free spirits, they are not afraid to look different from other people in their society. They tend to look like gypsies, wearing clothes that don’t match as well as exotic accessories that make a strong statement. Some clothes to consider include a floral v-neck empire-waist silk dress, a light scarf with fringe, crushed velvet blouse with a metallic brocade design, a fake fur vest, a short-sleeve loose-fitted blouse with draped fabric, clunky clog platform sandals, cropped knit cardigan with ruched back, bangles with a henna tattoo design, and large exotic-design earrings. A perfect look for a bohemian is to layer clothes, starting with a mid-sleeve cotton blouse, then a checkered camisole with ruffles, and then a short-sleeve long cardigan. A light scarf, wide-brim floppy hat, a purse with fringe, jeans, and artistic earrings with peace symbol are some typical accessories of what a bohemian might wear this fall season.

British-inspired style includes lots of plaid with black and red clothes and accessories. Some updates include silver studded belt, plaid tote bag, laser-cut belt, cuff watch or stainless steel watch with pleather strap, red scarf, plaid blouse with ruffles, ankle booties with ruffles, and long chain necklaces piled on–some with large black chain links while some with small twisted chains. Black leggings or blue denim is usually worn with these clothes and accessories. Makeup for this style includes red lipstick with black eyeliner and white eye shadow. Also, a plaid coat can be worn over a dress with ruffles. A black patent belt that cinches the waist matches the black patent Mary-Janes with a buckle band as well as the black patent fake reptile-skin purse. A black or plaid fedora that matches the coat gives the look of Sherlock Holmes.

The Collegiate/Prep School look involves wearing classic pieces, such as a navy blazer, a long cardigan, corduroy skirt, pants, shorts or leggings, and flat Mary-Janes. The perfect bag for a preppy person is a unique but interesting backpack. A knit zip-up rugby sweater, a wool cricket blazer, and a long-sleeve rugby cardigan-style knee-length dress all look very collegiate and elegant with oxford lace-up high-heel shoes. For a casual look, wear a denim mini-skirt with a cotton tank top, long-sleeve oxford shirt, and a long wool cardigan that has felt patches of letters, logos, mascots or symbols. Add tights and lace-up wedge boots to complete this outfit.

Modern Minimalism style tends to look dramatic, simple and austere because of its angular shapes as well as neutral colors. Such clothes and accessories tend to look futuristic and space age. Consider wearing a pencil skirt that has geometric designs in gray and black as well as a tailored, gray and simple jacket with an asymmetrical bottom hem. Under this jacket, wear a jersey tank top that has sheer inserts between the geometric graphics drawn on the front. Add a sterling silver torque-like ring and a geometric necklace. The Gamin style is all about adventure. Gamin people are very active, and they enjoy being outdoors, playing sports or traveling. They tend to wear rugged-looking accessories. Such accessories look like antiques because they are so worn. Gamins tend to wear clothes in natural and neutral colors of browns, beiges, grays and whites. A simple beige sweater with antique buttons on one shoulder or a romantic sweater with a soft necktie can be worn with a bomber jacket and men-style wool pants. A long silk scarf, with fringe on the bottom, can be added. Other accessories include vintage-looking knee-high lace-up boots, an antique-face round watch with a knotted pleather band, short pleather gloves, and a rugged-looking pleather shoulder bag. For jewelry, add a brass charm necklace with airplanes, animals, sports, or travel theme. Casual gamins wear hot pants in a layered form. Start with a long-sleeve blouse, and wear a short sleeve cotton cardigan over that. Then, wear denim shorts and flat ankle boots over dark tights. Add a knit cap.

Casual Comfort style tends to be very simple clothes that can be layered and draped. It has a laid-back look. Such clothes to consider are hoodies, t-shirts and drawstring pants in grays, whites, and light colors. A sleeveless cotton cardigan is worn with a ribbed cotton blouse and cable-knit leggings, all in a monochromatic color. Add a polka-dot cotton scarf, slouchy boots, and a cotton jacket with a hood. Gothic-inspired style now looks modern and sexy. But the color black continues to be the main color worn. Black leggings, skinny pants, mini-dresses and tank tops are worn with men-style jacket or vest. Accessories for this style include black platform shoes and chunky metal jewelry. A long black vest is worn over a black camisole, black mesh tank top, a sequined mini-skirt, and leggings with snake-print design. Add a spiked bracelet and black platform boots. Also, consider black stretch-fabric skinny pants worn with an elegant black drop-waist tank top that has black beaded chain necklace sewn on the front of the blouse. Then, wear black platform boots. This monochromatic all-black outfit looks very sleek, but the black beads on the tank top add a subtle glitter that looks perfect for cocktail parties. Another sexy look for an all-black Goth female is comprised of a black strapless romper, black fishnet stockings, black sequin beret, black beaded necklaces as well as a chain necklace with diamonds, black bangles, black ring, and black sequin clutch.

Feminine florals meets hodge-podge streetwear is no longer demure, but now has an edgy look. A long solid-color cardigan is worn with a small-print floral silk tank top, a large-print floral pleated skirt, dark tights, and platform sandals. Complete this outfit by carrying a fake reptile-skin satchel. A mid-sleeve floral cardigan, worn with a long-sleeve button-front shirt of small floral design and a short skirt with a dark floral design, looks quirky but fun with dark tights, platform sandals and a glazed pleather satchel. The sexy look is now all about mixing tailored classic pieces with sexy and body-hugging clothes that show off the figure. A low-cut white blouse is worn with hounds-tooth cropped men-style pants, a bracelet with shiny rhinestones, a patent pleather belt, and a matching bright-colored patent pleather platforms. A wrap cardigan or wrap shirt is worn over a leopard print blouse and a knee-length pencil skirt that has hounds-tooth print. Open-toe platform shoes looks sexy with this outfit. The new classics are now laid-back and relaxed. Suits and tweeds are now preferred in pink, burgundy, teal and gold rather than the traditional neutral colors. Vintage is now all about thrift-store chic and 40s-inspiration. Pencil skirts and shirts, each with different pattern designs, are worn together. Also, skirts and blouses of different textures are worn together. Different colors are worn together to make tailored pieces look loose, casual, and less structured. For instance, a knee-length pleated wool skirt is worn with a fake reptile-skin narrow belt, simple blouse, short-sleeve jacket and fishnet stockings.

Furthermore, to finish up your look for Fall 2009, you need the right hairstyle, makeup and shoes. Hairstyle is now elegant, either a long bob that is shoulder-length, where hair is parted in the middle, or a clean and neat updo. Updos can be made casual by adding headbands, hair combs and hairpieces that have feathers, gems and sequins. Popular makeup colors for this season are hot pink and red. Hot pink lipstick and blush with gray mascara, eye shadow and pencil soften tailored clothes and men-style clothes. The classic red lipstick with black mascara, eye shadow and pencil make men-style clothes look sexy and feminine. There are also many shoe styles this season. Platform pumps, lace-up ankle boots, ballet flats with decorative gems, knee-high boots, t-strap sandals, ankle wedge boots, over-the-knee boots, and thigh-high boots come in many colors, textures, designs and styles. It is all about picking the right shoes that best fits your style and personality.

When I walk into Old Navy, I see jeans for $10.  When I walk into Abercrombie or Hollister, I see jeans that are $70.  See the difference? The BIG difference? Obviously, many of the teens who walk into both of these places resort to Abercrombie or Hollister, despite this big price range.  Does it make them any better?  Any richer?  Any cooler? No.  It may make them feel like all of those things, but, if everyone buys from there, in the long wrong, the cooler kids will be the kids who stand out, who aren’t wearing Abercrombie or Hollister.  Don’t get me wrong.  I do like those stores, but there are many more affordable and unique stores out there that I’d rather buy from.

One tank top from there is $12.  Anywhere else? Around only $7!  With that figure in mind, it should pursuade anyone not to buy from there.  But it doesn’t end.  Ever.  It almost makes me sad how under-mind-control today’s teens are.  Pier pressure must be hitting them hard if they can’t even see past the label.

Wearing a scarf is always stylish, a clip-on earring will not only add to the look of the scarf, but will help hold the scarf in place.

Got some pumps that you love but they’re rather boring? Jazz them up by placing a matched set of clip-on earrings on the tops of them. Works well for Croc type shoes too.

Love to wear hat? Place a clip-on earring on the brim of your hat.

When wearing a button front blouse, clip a jeweled clip-on earring just above the top button instead of wearing a necklace.

Adorn your hair with a clip-on earring. Use a clip-on earring instead of a small hair barrette or clip and earring onto your pony tail holder.

Group a few thin metal bangle bracelets together and clip them together with clip-on earring, or wear several necklace chains and use a clip-on earring to adorn them and hold them together.

Place a clip-on earring on purse straps or purse closures or cell phone case for a little personal touch.

Use your imagination and think of ways to recycle clip-on earrings and make a fashion statement of your own.

Not so long ago tee shirts were viewed as casual comfort wear only. Most available for purchase were one of five leading brands, standard cuts usually unflattering and they were less then aesthetically pleasing. Yet we were all guilty of throwing on our old beat up, tourist trap tee that we bought as a rite of passage; and proceeding to paint the house, mow the lawn or do a sink full of dishes. The tee shirt of the 90’s served these purposes just fine and at the end of the day were thrown into a sad pile on your bathroom floor.

The tee shirt has made a serious come back that is changing how people view their projected image and is driving sales through the roof; which says a lot considering our current economic slump.

Everyone has an idea for a tee shirt, ask your uncle or professor and they will surely tell you that they are holding the secret to the best idea ever, thus the Internet is littered with websites offering “the sickest tee shirts available”. It takes a lot of digging to find the true gems in this industry, and with so many businesses finding success in this market there are twice as many getting lost in the shuffle and the ever changing demand.

When a “trend” is over saturated it’s no longer relevant simply because it is too widely available to the masses thus causing it’s appeal to dampen. Designers that are successful are creating new concepts all the time and riding the wave until it breaks.

Top Five T-Shirt Trends That Are Just Not Cool Anymore

1. Catchy one-liner’s that would make your parents ashamed

   I never understood this stance on marketable fashion. No matter how funny or clever, wearing a tee shirt that says “I’m Easy” is a bad idea for so many reasons. In a time where women are are trying to gain independence and wave their “educated flag”  it sends the wrong idea, and is by no means something that should be sought after. Come on folks!

2. Concert Tee Shirts

   I get it. You see a great show and want something to remember it by. Well my suggestion is to log on to itunes and download the CD because concert tee shirts are just as hideous as they were in 1988.  And believe it or not, people don’t envy you for wearing it, they are simply stifling snorts and fits of laughter debating how much you spent on that terrible garment.

3. Tourist Tees

   Don’t get me wrong I am by no means trying to kill the tourist revenue however there is an option to make a smart choice rather then a generic one. Just because you spent a holiday weekend in Martha’s Vineyard does not make it ok to buy the least expensive generic tee shirt you see. The only time someone will care about a tourist tee shirt is if it makes them want to visit that destination and the word “Virgina Beach” in an athletic font will not feed that need.

4. Tattoo-inspired Tees

   It’s been done and done again. They are flashy and look like a tween spent his weekend bedazzling it for an art project. These shirts used to say “edgy” and “wealthy” and now they just say desperate. If you want a tattoo, get one.

5. Tee Shirts with your kid’s face on them

   Loving your kids is great, wearing their giant face on your chest is creepy.

   A tee shirt has more potential now then it ever has. It can be worn casual or worn underneath a suit coat. A versatile piece of material that has the unique presence to appeal to a wide variety of consumers is now viewed as a staple in one’s wardrobe and therefor should inspire more thought and in some cases more cash toward building your personal brand.

As an individual, no one can dictate your taste so my recommendations are not based on designs but rather how a tee shirt is made. Below is my top 5 of the coolest new concepts in tee shirt design and these concepts are here for the long haul and can only continue to grow.

   With recent advancements in screen printing, you can now purchase tee shirts that have prints from hem to hem.

   Most tees have a front chest print or a back print, now you will see more prints on the ribs, sleeves, and lower left or right. This method keeps people on their toes and looking.

3. Garment construction

   Move over big brands and watch out for smaller custom designed garments with unique features IE: wide waist cuffs, alternative pocket placement and longer bodies, just to name a few.

4. Tee Shirt Content

For men, guess what? You also have to make a good first impression. You don’t need to wear a tuxedo or anything fancy, but you must look professional. A long sleeve white shirt and a tie with black or navy blue slacks is fine.  Men are not as complicated as women so basically all you need to do is get a haircut the day before the interview and make sure that you are clean and have shaved. For guys, it is also important to have clean and short fingernails. If you want to let your goat-tee grow after that day it is fine. Just make sure that you become acquainted with the company’s policies and regulations in case you are hired. And this goes for women as well. If you do get hired, it is very important to continue looking the part.  Perhaps, it is a good idea to keep a jacket in your office or cubicle area in case you have to meet clients on a regular day to day basis. In 2007, I worked for an attorney who complimented me on my navy blue suit the day of the interview. I am sure that he had other reasons to hire me, but dressing the part really made him take notice of me and hire  me on the spot.

Finally, attitude is very important. Make sure that you smile on the day of your interview. Maintain a good posture and don’t shake your employers hand too hard. Try not to get too nervous and sound repetitive when answering those interview questions. You want to try to answer as best and creative as possible so you can’t stand out from the rest of the candidates applying for the position.
