MTG – Top 10 Faeries

MTG – Top 10 Faeries

Taking a look at the best faeries ever printed!

The creature type “faerie” was pretty much a joke type for most of MTG history. There were some good ones, but it wasn’t until the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks that we really saw some awesome faeries. In fact, faeries are arguably the strongest tribal type right now. This list will show off the best of the faerie cards, old and new. Also, these cards are mostly selected because of their power in a faerie tribal deck, so if your favorite doesn’t make the list that might be why. Anyway, let’s get started!

If you want another opinion, check out my good friend Mike1229’s article on faeries. This one is like a response to his. It can be found here.

Honorable Mention: Willow Priestess

Here’s one of those older faeries that just had to be mentioned. It can’t really do anything in faerie decks today because it is green, but it is pretty amazing in some other situations. Use it in a changeling deck and you’ll have some incredibly fun things going on. Of course, you could also use this with Conspiracy to play Progenitus or something like that, but that’s a little excessive. It’s just cool to show off a card from Homelands that is actually worth something in a deck! Anyway, onto the faeries you really want to see.

#10 Puppeteer Clique

This card allows you to use a creature that’s in your opponent’s graveyard once and then it goes away forever. The thing I like about this card is that it has persist, meaning you get to take two creature cards out of your opponent’s graveyard to use for yourself. It’s a little pricey, so it’s a little weak. However, it still serves its purpose and can be very powerful.

#9 Cloud Of Faeries

The only old faerie to make the top ten, this one just barely makes it. I feel that the fact that you can play this card and another faerie in one turn is awesome. Not only that, but you can play this card and then keep your mana open to throw out a Counterspell if you want. A personal favorite use for this card is High Tide with one mana, then play this card with the second. Two lands becomes four mana then! Cycling is always an option too, but I don’t use that too often and don’t know how many people do. Not the most amazing card in the world, but one I feel deserves recognition.

#8 Oona, Queen Of The Fae

Despite costing six mana, this card has a lot of power. It’s well worth its cost. You mill (or rather, remove) X cards from the top of an opponent’s library and choose a color. Each card removed of the chosen color gives you a 1/1 black and blue faerie rogue with flying. That’s an amazing ability! With cards like Oona’s Blackguard to boost up those faeries as they come into play you can have quite an army. If you’ve got the mana to play this card then you’ve got the mana to put up to five faeries in play a turn. However, the six mana does limit its power as well as the fact that three color decks run rampant these days.

#7 Vendilion Clique

This card is great because it has flash, flying, and a very valuable third ability. You can use this card to see any player’s hand and take a card from it. That card then is put on the bottom of the chosen player’s library and they draw a card. This means you can use it to take away key cards from your opponent or on yourself to get rid of something that’s uselss to you. It’s also a nice attacker/blocker because it has three power. It can kill off a lot with that. A versatile card that may deserve a higher rank than I’m giving it, but I feel there are a lot of cards that can do similar things out there already, while some of the other cards I want to showcase are more unique. Moving on.

#6 Sower Of Temptation

Sporting the same mana cost as good old Control Magic, this card gains control of any creature. If this card leaves play then the creature is returned to its original its original controller. However, my thoughts are that this is weaker than Control Magic because it’s a lot easier to just shoot some damage at this card or a kill spell than it is to throw a Disnechant or something at Control Magic. It’s a pretty big target. Almost more so than Oona’s Blackguard. Speaking of Oona’s Blackguard

#5 Oona’s Blackguard

Holy crap. This card always amazes me. Not only does it boost all your rogues by giving them +1/+1 counters, but it also gives them the ability to force a player dealt combat damage by them to discard a card. This card also only costs two mana to play! It’s very difficult to face off against and something like this. I reccomend a Lightning Bolt immeadiately or whatever else you can use to stop this card. It will hurt you.

#4 Glen Elendra Archmage

A little pricey, but this card is Negate for one less mana and usable twice. It is a bummer that you can’t counter creatures, but faerie decks don’t usually worry about creatures. It’s more dangerous to have people slinging Lightning Bolt and Terminate around. This card takes care of such pesky cards. This card is all about being a one mana Negate so there isn’t much more to say. It’s a good card that has a lot of protective power, but not as much as our next card…

#3 Scion Of Oona

This card is a blessing to cards earlier on this list like Oona’s Blackguard and Sower Of Temptation. When your faeries have shroud you don’t need to worry about them getting smashed like flies. In fact, since this card isn’t legendary you can have two in play and then all your faeries will have shroud! It’s also an awesome card because it has flash, meanin you can fizzle some spells by making them no longer have targets, because the faeries originally targeted will no longer be legal to target. Remeber though, this card doesn’t have shroud and is pretty weak so don’t let it get killed off.

#2 Mistbind Clique

This card is a little annoying because you have to get rid of a faerie to use it, but it gets the job done. You want to play it during your opponent’s upkeep to keep them from being able to play anything on the turn and slow them down a little. It’s a very big creature for faeries and can do quite a bit offensively. If you can champion something like Puppeteer Clique, that would be best so that if this card is destroyed you can trigger another card’s ability. This card just gives you a lot to work with. The less time your opponent has to do stuff, the more time you have to destroy them.

#1 Bitterblossom

This card is just crazy. For only two mana you get a 1/1 flying black faerie rogue each of your upkeeps. Of course, you lose one life too, but that’s small price to pay. With cards like Oona’s Blackguard and Scion Of Oona to pump up your 1/1’s this card can be a game winner. It’s an amazing card that still sells for quite a bit of money (and I know why!). It is a faerie because it’s a tribal spell, which may seem cheap, but I think it’s just awesome. It’s the best faerie, and the best tribal spell, of all time!
