Project – Dracula, the Game

Project – Dracula, the Game

I am comparing a game board I created with the ever so popular book, Dracula, by Bram Stoker. You may use the Summary as a reference to the book, if you want to read the spoilers.

Summary

Our game board was created to experience what the characters did in the book, Dracula . It all begins with Jonathan Harker on his way to Carfax, where Count Dracula awaits him there to buy the real estate property. As Harker makes his way there, the villagers tell him of evil spirits in Dracula’s castle. Jonathan eventually accepts a crucifix which an old lady hands him for protection. After hearing what the peasants have to say, he meets Dracula in his carriage and they arrive at Carfax. After only a few days in Carfax, Jonathan realizes horrible things have happened. Jonathan sees he is trapped within the mansion, and there is no one else in the castle besides the three voluptuous vampire women and Dracula himself.

After Harker escapes the dreadful place, the story shifts to Lucy and Mina. In England, Lucy has accepted Arthur Holmwood’s marriage proposal, having to choose between him, Quincey Morris, and John Seward. Tragically, Dracula tears apart the family by biting Lucy’s neck, which causes her to become part of the “undead” as a vampire. To let her rest in peace, Lucy has to be decapitated in addition to having her fiancé jab a stake into her heart. Once this was done, Van Helsing, Jonathan Harker, Mina, and the others decide to get rid of Dracula once and for all.

Van Helsing explains to the others how they must defeat Dracula. After Mina has an encounter with Dracula, she has his blood in her body, which gives Dracula further control of her. The positive side is that Mina can sense where Dracula is whenever she is in hypnosis. This allows the team to find Dracula back in Transylvania. Quincey and the others attack Dracula, knowing his weaknesses, and finish him off as Jonathan stabs the evil vampire in the heart. Though the good side prevails, Quincey gets killed and later, Mina names her son after him.

How The Game and Book Relate

As stated above, Dracula (the game) is related to the book as the people playing can somewhat see how the plot of the story goes. They start off at the “START” point and eventually come across a large crucifix. The crucifix drawing represents Jonathan Harker’s start point in the novel. He was given the crucifix by an old lady so that he would have the necessary protection needed to fend off any evil spirits nearby.

As the player of the board game moves along, they can see a large brown horse pulling a carriage holding people inside. Just like in the book, this shortcut in the game represents Jonathan’s frightening ride in Dracula’s carriage where they reach Carfax, the gray castle in the middle of the game.

Later on, the player will pass a boat (Russian ship holding Dracula’s fifty boxes of native soil), a young pale girl in her bed (Lucy after being bit), and then approach a faint drawing of a dangerous looking woman. This person is actually the undead Lucy, who needs to have the stake plunged into her heart in the novel.

Soon, the player will reach the picture showing Mina drinking blood from Dracula’s chest while Jonathan is sprawled behind them unconscious. They will then pass the horrific sight onto a laying coffin and rotting body, which simply show one of Dracula’s fifty coffins with a one of his victims nearby.

We then see Jonathan placing a communion wafer in one of Dracula’s coffins and Van Helsing protecting Mina from the vampire girls, who are trying to lure her away.

Finally, the player has hopefully reached the “FINISH” line and can proudly say they foiled Dracula’s plots once again. You can see him laying there with Jonathan’s knife in his heart before vanishing with an evil grin.

i understand how the plot is the main part, but if all the players just move on aboard, it becomes exactly like racehorse, or candyland. I don’t know about you, but it seems like it would get boring and repetitive after you looked at the board for the first time.
