Risk And The World

Risk And The World

Tying together the world and the war game Risk.

The ideas that the game Risk portrays and the ideas that world history portrays are very similar. These ideas are shown very frequently in world history, and many of them even came into play during the game of Risk. This game and world history are very similar; the experiences of this game can also be compared with major historical events that happened in world history.

Many ideas and terms come up during the gameplay of Risk. Many of these are shown in world history. One of these is the idea of fear. This is shown in Risk when one player has a large amount of land and armies, and the other players want to stay away from them because of the fear that that one player is causing. This fear eventually leads to another important idea: Alliance. Alliances are when some army joins together with another army, and forms a team. Fear can form alliances between armies because if one army is feared because it is so strong, forming an alliance with it will not only increase the strength of the army, it will also ensure protection for the country. In the game of Risk, when two people form alliances, it gave them the advantage because those people now have combined, resulting in a stronger army. This stronger army can conquer the other divided players easily.

Another idea is strategy. This is important because without proper techniques and planning, any army will be wiped out. For example, the Trojans used this by strategically placing their archers and siege weapons on top of their impenetrable wall. This resulted in maximum casualties for the opposing army. Strategy plays a huge role in wars, and without it, there would be a lot of confusion. Strategy also plays a big part in the game of Risk, because lack of proper and careful planning for conquest will result in faster death of the army.

A very important idea that played important roles in both Risk and world history is psychology. A person’s thinking can change if their mind is manipulated into thinking something else. In Risk, if one person attacks another army, and a completely different player agrees with this, the attacker would be compelled even more into attacking. If a player can manipulate the minds of the other players to his/her liking, they would be unstoppable. Another thing that can change people’s minds and affect them is bribery. Bribery can even change the outcomes of wars, depending on whether or not important people can be bought, just like in Risk. For example, someone in Risk could offer someone else some land or even money if that person will not attack them. The briber now has protection from one person, which can possibly change the outcome of the whole game.

There is also the idea of empathy. If someone feels pity for another person, they will probably leave him/her alone, or at least try to help them. In Risk, if there is a very weak army, and the player who owns that army psychologically attacks the other players with pleas and such, the other players will most likely leave that player alone. Empathy can also lead to alliances, because sometimes someone can take so much pity on one person, they cannot help but protect them.

The experiences in this game are most like when Hernando Cortez and the Spanish began to discover, conflict, and conquer with the Aztecs. A major conflict was when Hernando turned the Aztecs living on the outside against the emperor. Then, he marched the armies through different Aztec cities to conquer them all. This was like Risk, when armies were taken through different countries and began to fight with them, and eventually beat them, or get defeated.

This had a lasting effect on history because Hernando Cortez actually conquered the land to the west of Europe. When news of his success reached Europe, many more countries sent over people to conquer free lands. Without him, it probably would have taken a lot longer for more people from other countries to come and conquer. Also, Cortes also made all of Europe as a whole rich, because he brought back many rare goods and slaves which were traded for money.
