Game Strategies: Hearts

The first round of the game is always the easiest. Whoever has the two of clubs starts the round. Remember, the first hand you cannot get rid of any points. If you have no clubs then this is a good time to get rid of a high card in another suit. The king or ace of spades is the perfect choice if you have them; you do not want to get stuck with that queen of spades unless you are planning on running the hearts as well.

Most people will start the second round with a low spade. The purpose of this move is to draw out the queen of spades early. If the person is holding a shallow queen of spades then they will want to get pass the spade that has been played and change the suit to clubs or diamonds. This is a critical part of the game.

If the person is holding the queen of spades and several hearts and a lot in another suit, then this could be their chance to run the hand. If they are prevalent in diamonds, then lead with a high diamond. Play the diamonds out to get the hearts away from other players. Then continue with the hearts to drain the rest of the hearts from the other players, and save the queen for last.

Typically, however, it is best just to play spade and try to get the shallow queen drawn out early. Once you know who has the queen, be sure they do not get all the hearts.

Of course, it is a good idea to play as low as possible throughout the game, but watch the other players carefully. Taking just one point in every hand will stop the other players from running on you. From the second hand on you must watch where all the hearts and the queen of spades have fallen. As long as they are not with just one person then play as low as possible.

If you are playing with experienced players then a run will rarely happen, but it is still possible. If you have the ace, king and queen of hearts, and the queen of clubs, then you have a chance at the run. Set up the players a little early and try to get one or two other hearts from them, and then come out hard and fast.

If you do not have the high hearts cards then you are taking a chance, but there is a possibly of drawing some of the higher hearts from other players. Running in other suit may pull the hearts you need, and a very risky move is playing the queen of hearts. Most experienced players will see through this immediately.
