John Avon’s Top 10 Illustrations for Magic The Gathering
The top 10 MTG illustrations by artist John Avon…
Of the Many artists in Magic the Gathering, John Avon is one of my all time favorites. His vivid artwork stands out amongst many other cards. His special talent for portrayibg vivid scenery in his work sets him apart from others. This list documents, in my opinion, his top 10 pieces of work done for Magic the Gathering:
#10
Magus of the Moat

The art on this card shows determination, power, and grace all nicely put together. One of my favorite cards of all time as well.
#9
Tangle

A pretty cool abstract picture here. A people tree? the captured image of struggle and nature is presented here, symbolically showing that nature can overpower any force.
#8
Plains

A classic Plains, this is the best illustration on a white mana producing card if you ask me.
#7
Angelic Wall

More power is captured here. The Angel shaped clouds and the tiny people make me feel a little insignificant just looking at it!
#5
Dermoplasm

A strange figment of the imagination. Avon captures the weird side of the blue portion of the game here. I wish the card was easier to use because the picture deserves some more playing time.
#4
Halcyon Glaze

Another imaginative one. The Shattering glass and the graceful bird image makes one wonder if the stained glass window came to life!
#3
Forest

This forest looks like a photograph. It is so well done that it makes you feel like you are there.
#2
Unhinged Forest

Another beautiful forest illustration. Avon’s lands are one of a kind.
#1
Waterveil Cavern

Woa! this picture is breathtaking! hands down, one of the most powerful illustrations in the game, this cards raw beauty brings the art in the game of Magic to a whole new level!

My son got me into fantasy card games;built me decks so I could play with him. Some of them I value more than my furniture. It’s a great hobby. Appeciate the pic’s.
