MTG: Mythic Rares, Good or Bad Idea?
Wizards has added a 4th rarity to MTG cards.
“Mythic Rare”, now the most sought after cards in the game of Magic the Gathering. Mythic Rares now have the possibility of taking the “rare slot” in booster packs. They are “extra rare” and are supposed to be the best cards in the set. They are marked with a darker, almost red expansion symbol. Recently the Mythic Rares have been mainly Plainswalkers and stand out cards, but the question arises, how does a card make the cut for mythic rare? Is it worth changing some cards rarity to make them harder to find when they are re-printed?

Noble Hierarch is a “Rare” and Conflux is a “Mythic Rare”. You be the judge of which is better. I would prefer the “Rare” over the “mythic rare” any time here. I think that this illustrates that making a better “rare slot” only will cause frustration and debate among collectors. Just making one rare possibility will re-simplify things. The above comparison illustrates only how commercially based the game design is becoming.

Lord of the Pit has recently been changed to a mythic rare after 7 previous printings in the “rare” slot. Mythic rare is just a label to get collectors to purchase more cards. Don’t let the rarity of the card change your opinion of how useful the card is!
