MTG – Top 10 Tribal Spells
Taking a look at the best tribal spells of all time!
The Lorwyn block holds most of the fifty tribal spells created in MTG. These spells all work well when used with creatures that share the same type as the spell. Tribal spells brought a new type of card into the game and also brought some serious power to the table. The creature types that were made into tribal cards include: Rebel, giant, faerie, rogue, elf, goblin, merfolk, kithkin, shapeshifter, wizard, elemental, warrior, treefolk, shaman, and soldier. Is your favorite on the list? Read on and find out!
#10 Fodder Launch

This card just barely bumped Hoofprints Of The Stagoff the list. This card comes in at number ten because it’s a little pricey in the mana department and costs you a creature at the same time. However, it is the Goblin Grenade of today. This card also could potentially only cost one black mana if you had three cards out that reduced the cost of goblin spells. It takes out nearly any creature and also deals five damage to that creature’s controller (even if the creature isn’t destroyed). However, the problem is that you can’t use it if your opponent doesn’t control any creatures. It may not be the best tribal spell on this list, but it certainly gets the job done.
#9 Veteran’s Armaments

Kithkin (and non-kithkin) soldier decks are pretty powerful. This card equips a soldier and turns it into a force to be reckoned with. It’s nice that it gives a boost when you attack with a bunch of creatures, as well as one when you’re attacked by a bunch of creatures. One of the best parts about this card though is that it can be automatically attached to any soldier when it comes into play. It really helps to be able to save that two mana for something else.
#8 Tarfire

A goblin version of Shock? You can’t do much better than that! Honestly, that’s all this card really is, so there isn’t really much more to say.
#7 Militia’s Pride

This card works very well in a kithkin deck because it costs very little mana to play and to use. Even though it only puts little 1/1 kithkin soldier tokens into play (tapped and attacking), chances are you’ll have things like Wizened Cenn out boosting them up to be more powerful. The only downside is that you have to pay one white mana for each token you want to put into play. Also, you can only use this card’s ability an amount equal to the number of nontoken attacking creatures you control.
#6 Boggart Shenanigans

This card makes use of all those goblins that you can sacrifice to do something. This allows you to more casually attack with 1/1 goblins, knowing that they’ll do their damage even in they do get blocked. It works well with things like Mogg Fanatic and Mudbutton Torchrunner as well to add on some extra damage.
#5 Merrow Commerce

This card works wonders in any merfolk deck, though works especially well with the white and blue merfolk decks. Many merfolk cards allow you to tap them (or other merfolk you control) to do some kind of effect. This card prevents you from having all your merfolk tapped. It works great to strengthen your defenses. Also, you can them tap your merfolk at the end of your opponent’s turn to use their abilities all over again. It’s a ridiculously powerful card for an uncommon.
#4 Nameless Inversion

This common card makes it all the way up to the number four position because of its power. Almost everything in tribal decks can be killed off with this card for a very small amount of mana. Also, because it’s a tribal spell you can make it cost only one black mana, making it similar to a Lightning Bolt. It’s a very impressive card that appearas in my decks.
#3 Summon The School

This card is very powerful in a merfolk deck. Especially because many of the merfolk do something when they become tapped. This is a card that works very well with Merrow Commerce. What’s really cool is that the two merfolk tokens come into play untapped, meaning you can use them to bring this card. I’ve seen as many as twenty merfolk put into play in one turn using this card. A lot of cards got milled as well because of Drowner Of Secrets using the merfolk tokens after Merrow Commerce triggered. This card can do a lot of amazing things and shouldn’t be underestimated.
#2 Elvish Promenade

Just like every other time I talk about elves I’ll say that I hate them. They are possibly the strongest tribal creature type. This card can put a lot of elves into play. Usually you’ll put around ten or more in play when you use this (if you’re running a good elf deck). I’ve seen one use this card in a combo and get around 100 elves in play (fifty from this card, the other fifty from various crazy spells). Creating a swarm of elves and then using one Taunting Elf has been a classic elf strategy, and this card really helps that type of deck along. It may be a little pricey for some, but I feel it has a lot of worth.
#1 Bitterblossom

This card is nuts and still sells for a good chunk of change. You lose one life a turn, but getting a 1/1 flying faerie rogue does a lot more for you than that one life ever will. If you’re using things like Oona’s Blackguard and some of the other amazing rogue related cards you’ll find that this card can be a game ending card. Unless your deck is built to deal with this sort of thing you won’t really be able to stop all the little 1/1 flying creatures. They’ll simply tear you down to nothing (or swiftly destroy you if you’re pumping them). It’s completely outrageous and can be played for the very affordable two mana. The best tribal card ever printed.
