MTG: Top 20 Birds

MTG: Top 20 Birds

Taking a look at the best bird cards ever printed!

Flying creatures have always had an edge in MTG. All bird cards have flying, and that got me thinking. What are the best birds in all of MTG? Well, let’s anwer that question! It’s time for the top 20 birds of all time!

(All pictures came from www.magiccards.info)

#20 Crimson Roc

An okay card. It can be a 3/2 first strike flyer when blocking, but otherwise is just a 2/2 flyer. Don’t take this one seriously because the picture was so cool it had to be here. Everything else is much better.

#19 Soulcatcher

Any deck with flying creatures can benefit from this card. This card gets bigger whenever a creature with flying goes into the graveyard (any graveyard). A cheap card that can grow into a big ol’ bird. Let the eagle soar.

#18 Tidehollow Strix

An artifact bird, Tidehollow Strix is good because it is cheap and has great abilities. There isn’t really a drawback, except that it’s multi-colored.

#17 Crookclew Transmuter

This card is a good way to screw your opponent when they think they are in control. Also, this card is a wall killer. This card is useful in many situations, and it’s very under rated, perhaps even on this list.

#16 Wild Aesthir

This card is a flying 3/1 with first strike. You won’t play this card unless you intend on using its ability. A 3/1 first strike with flying for only three mana is a good deal.

#15 Aven Squire

This is a good, strong bird from Conflux. Exalted cards are becoming more popular and are adding new elements to the game. This card is essentially a 2/2 flyer at the begining of the game, and when you get a bigger creature in play it boosts that creature with exalted.

#14 Aven Augur

This card is a good way to get rid of something(s) your opponent worked really hard to cast or something that is about to kill you. Without its ability, it still works well as a 2/2 flyer.

#13 Cloudchaser Kestrel

This card is good because it works like a Disenchant. However, watch that you aren’t forced to destroy your own enchantment. The ability to turn someting into a white permanent can really matter too. Sometimes certain cards have protection from a color and this card is a way around it.

#12 Stormscape Familiar

Any card that reduces your casting costs is cool. This card also works well in the new shards set. Also, if you’ll notice, the owl is a very similar to the Strix cards. Maybe because it’s an owl and they look alike, but I think the Strix cards are based off of this one.

#11 Keeper Of The Nine Gales

This card is a good way to send cards back to your opponent’s cards back to their hand every turn. If you give your birds vigilance, then this card is even more incredible. I can’t think of a better way to annoy an opponent until they make a bad move out of frustration. An annoyed opponent will play much worse than one who is focused.

#10 Major Teroh

This card is a little situational, but being able to remove all black creatures? That’s amazing and one of the most useful abilities ever given to a bird.

#9 Lieutenant Kirtar

This card is a good way to take care of one creatue that’s pestering you. It’s only a one time thing, but is still useful in any game.

#8 Glarecaster

This card costs a lot! However, if you can afford it though, you can redirect any amount of damage dealt to Glarecaster to whatever you want! You could even cast spells that deal damage only to a creature and then bounce it to your opponent.

#7 Celestial Gatekeeper

This card is good simply because you can use to to return two birds/clerics to play. You can get some seriously good cards that you lost early on in the game.

#6 Aven Brigadier

This card is a beast. Well, it’s a bird soldier, but you know what I mean. This card can boost your birds and soldiers. Bird soldiers get +2/+2! Wow! 25% of this list is bird soldiers. The cards that are just 1/1 or 2/2 bird soldiers that aren’t on the list can get huge with this card in play. You could even have more than one of these in play!

#5 Commander Eesha

This card is a quick one. Protection from creatures gives this card immunity to a lot of effects and it becomes unblockable.

#4 Birds Of Paradise

This card has always been saught after and is a staple in some multi-colored decks. Llanowar Eleves is a dead beat compared with this card.

#3 Swans Of Bryn Argoll

This card is a great blocker. In a mill deck, this speeds up the process a lot! Put something like Hero’s Resolve on this card and it will be much more effective.

#2 Kangee, Aerie Keeper

This card boosts birds a lot! If you have more than seven mana, this card is insane. With seven mana you can boost all your birds with +1/+1. A good card if you have the mana.

#1 Windbrisk Raptor

Lifelink is awesome. This card is a good way to keep your life up. Also, this card is a pretty big bird! If you play more than one of these, you’re in luck! Each instance of lifelink triggers seperately. This card will keep your life up while bring your opponent’s life down. In the words of Kurt Vonnegut, “Poo-tee-weet?”

Although I feel your criticism may be a little unconstructive, I would like to defend my pick of Swans Of Bryn Argoll.

This card really can be useful for milling. Two cards that could combo well with it are Arcane Laboratory or Entangler. The first card would control what they would be able to play and the second would make Swans Of Bryn Argoll able to block any number of creatures. This would mean a greater ability to mill. Also, if playing a deck with flying creatures, Lure is also an acceptable way to accelerate this card.

I feel that you looked at this card at face value alone. Please contemplate your comments more before typing them. It’s actually a pretty good card! Thanks for reading though.

Uh, I don’t think that is an appropriate comment at all. It has nothing to do with this article and is also very rude. Bob’s Your Uncle, don’t listen to that guy! Even though I don’t always agree with you this guy is taking things too far. He will be blocked from all my articles from now on

Of course… the ignorant will remain ignorant.

Block me too so that the illusion that your lists and articles are even half-decent is maintained.

Don’t let mommy’s little boy be sad!

I blocked was going to block someone other than Bob’s Your Uncle. Although Bob’s Your Uncle does sometimes put his comments a little more rudely than I appreciate, he does offer insight and shows he knows what he is talking about.

You do not show any knowledge of MTG. All your comments show are that you like to put others down. Please give some kind of critcism of the article that has value

Beacon Hawk and Courier Hawk should be placed here. For 2 mana a 1/2 flying vigilance or a 1/1 flying, untaping, pump defensive is something worth in every bird deck. Just a pity they are not soldiers.
Phantom Flock is also a good card though expensive, but adding a +1/+1 to it makes it a good blocker even after it loses all rokens
