MTG: Top 30 Goblins
Taking a look at the best goblins of all time!
Goblins have always been a quick way to win a game of MTG. However, I think it’s time to take a little more in depth look at goblins. Goblins don’t all need to be in a goblin deck to be great. Some of these cards work in goblin decks and some work on their own. Either way, let’s get started!
All pictures came from www.magiccards.info
#30 Ben-Ben, Akki Hermit

This card is good in any mono-red deck. You should be able to deal at least four damage to an attacking creature. I reccomend this in a direct damage deck because you can use this card to take out attacking creatures and then after that, play an instant on your opponent’s turn to deal damage to them. Just keep your mountains open!
#29 Zo-Zu Tge Punisher

This is one of those goblins that doesn’t have to be in a goblin deck. This card works great with land destruction. Your opponent will have to play some lands if they want to stay in the game, and this card should make that a more painful experience.
#28 Reckless One

A goblin that is useless outside of a goblin deck, Reckless One is a quick and powerful card. Usually this card is about a 4/4 or 5/5. If you have more goblins in play than five, then you should have won by the time you get this card.
#27 Fodder Launch

This card, though not a goblin creature, is still a goblin. It’s like the cousin of Goblin Grenade (which doesn’t make the list because it is not tribal but is much better). Goblin Grendade is much faster, but Fodder Launch is more deadly. This card gets rid of a creature (usually) and also hits your opponent for five damage.
#26 Goblin Lookout

This card is really cool for those final charges. You can sacrifice a goblin that was blocked or has an ability that triggers when it leaves play so that you’ll get the most out of your sacrifice. If worst comes to worst, you can sacrifice this card to itself! A good card indeed.
#25 Frogtosser Banneret

With the Lorwyn block, black goblins became very powerful. It’s debatable whether mono-red goblin decks or black-red goblin decks are better. Then there’s the red/green goblins, but I don’t want to talk about how unnecesarry those are. Getting back on track, this card is sweet. It reduces the costs of your goblin and rogue spells. Goblin decks are fast, but this card made them supersonice. This card can be used in a rogue deck too, but those aren’t as common as goblin decks. I would say that this card is probably only going to be found in goblin decks. Either way, it’s good!
#24 Goblin Welder

A controversial pick. This card is at least a one drop creature. However, for those times that you’re against an artifact deck, there’s nothing more amusing than taking a great card your opponent played and trading it in for an artifact land they sacrificed or some little 1/1. Hilarious.
#23 Squee, Goblin Nabob

I love annoying cards. This is one of them. It comes back all the time! Three mana for a 1/1? Yes. It’s worth it. Goblin Grenade, Fodder Launch, and if you don’t want to play it and still use it, Lightning Axe! This card can be thrown away without worry during a game because it will always come back. A general nuisance indeed.
#22 Boggart Shenanigans

The only other tribal spell on this list, Boggar Shenanigans. This card makes your goblins all the more fun to sacrifice. I like to combine this with Goblin Bombardment. Blitz your opponent, sacrifice everthing that is blocked and us all that damage to kill your opponent.
#21 Goblin Pyromancer

One of those cards you play after spending five minutes adding up how much damage you’ll need to do to kill your opponent. It’s a final assualt. I would never do this against a green deck with open mana. Fog will destroy you. However, most of the time this card will destroy someone. Plus, you only destroy all goblins if this is in play at the end of the turn. Just sacrifice it to one of the cards I mentioned earlier in this list. I reccomend Goblin Bombardment (which is not on this list, but mentioned).
#20 Ib Halfhert, Goblin Tactician

Another card for blizting your opponent. At the end of your opponent’s turn, sacrifice all your mountains and then all out assault your oppoent. Your opponent will not block your creatures. Maybe save a few mountains and then boost your creatures with an instant?
#19 Goblin Matron

This card is invaluable in a game. You can get any goblin. With tribal spells, this card became even more powerful. I don’t really need to say anything else. Getting any goblin is amazing.
#18 Goblin Flectomancer

Probably the strangest goblin on the list, this card has a good ability. Switching the target of a spell will definetly keep your opponent from using spells like Blaze or Counterspell. Blue goblins are weird either way.
#17 Goblin Sledder & Mogg Raider

This card works well no matter what. You can get rid of pacified creatures that are just taking up space, boost any creature (not just your own), and you can sacrifice this cards to themselves. I’ve used these cards a lot and they’ve never let me down.
#16 Goblin Warchief

This card kicks Frogtosser Banneret’s butt. This card is a little stronger, gives all goblins haste, and reduces their casting cost. I don’t know if you can argue with the usefullness of this card. Goblins were supersonic with Frogtosser Banneret, so now they must be light speed.
#15 Skirk Fire Marshal

This card costs a lot, but when you are about to lose it will save your life. Getting five goblins is easier than you think, but not easy to deal lethal damage. This card let’s that be possible. This card can get a draw or a victory pretty easily. If the game is still going on then you can use this card again because it has protection from red!
#14 Goblin Razerunners

One of the Conflux cards that works in a mono-colored deck, this card is strong! This card can work outside a goblin deck, but works best in one. This is mainly because you need less mana in goblin decks than in other red decks. Anyway, this card should be doing about 3 damage a turn to your opponent after a few turns. If you can put counters on this card another way then great! It only needs +1/+1 counters. Those are easier to get than you’d think. Maybe use Cannibalize in a red-black deck?
#13 Goblin Piledriver

Althoug this card has never been one of my favorites since it can easily be chump blocked, it is good. Against a blue deck this card is certain death. In a worst case scenario, this card should be a 5/2 when attacking. I imagine it being more like a 9/2 though. Probably bigger.
#12 Knucklebone Witch

A wonderful way to start out a game. This card wastes an opponent’s kill spell and if they don’t use one, then it gets to be a pretty big creature. There’s not much else to say. This card does suck at the end of the game though.
#11 Goblin King

Probably the card that helped start the craze with goblins, this card is great. If you play a red deck you will win with this card. Otherwise, the +1/+1 is nothing to laugh at.
#10 Mad Auntie

Goblin King is good, but this card is a little bit better. No mountainwalk, but this card can save your goblins. Since the Lorwyn block, there are a lot more goblins you want to keep alive than there used to be. Mountainwalk is nice, but is sometimes useless. This ability is one that always does something.
#9 Mogg Maniac

This card is good in any red deck. It’s similar to Wall Of Souls, but can attack. It also can be destroyed much more easily, but is a card that will keep you safe for a while.
#8 Lightning Crafter

This card is a walking Lightning Bolt. Three damage every turn. This card has no weaknesses. Champion a Goblin/Shaman? Not a the slightest problem. This card is almost better than Lightning Bolt because you can use it every turn for free!
#7 Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

This card works in any red deck. Copying a big creature and then sending it in is awesome. One of my favorite things to do with this was shown to me by a player called Kevin Kelsey. He used this card with Pandemonium and Broodmate Dragon to get a free 4/4 flying token every turn in addition to the copy. That’s eight damage a turn, plus the attacking 4/4 flying copy! A powerful combo that spells disaster for any opponent.
#6 Siege-Gang Commander

This card puts a lot in play. You play this card and you get four creatures for the price of one! Also, this card makes all your goblins into Shocks (though one mana more). Combine this with Boggart Shenanigans and you’ll be able to deal three damage each time you use this ability.
#5 Boggart Mob

This card is big. A 5/5 for only four mana is sweet. It’s other ability is ridiculous. Goblins get generated like crazy with this card in play. This card destroys your opponent in about two or three turns. I can’t say anything else about this card other than wow.
#4 Caterwauling Boggart

I was tempted to make this card number one. This card is Goblin War Drums incarnated. However, it only works for goblins and elementals. This is a way to speed up victory. The only problem is that this card costs four mana, while Goblin War Drums is only three mana.
#3 Wort, Boggart Auntie

This card makes sacrificing goblins a less painful process. You get one back every turn! You already know how to optomize sacrificing goblins by this point in the article, so I won’t explain it too much more. Also, this card is nice because it can’t be killed by Shock, which has claimed many 2/2’s with good abilities. If this card were a 2/2 it would be at least five places lower on the list, if not more.
#2 Festering Goblin

Probably the best zombie of all time, this card is also one of the best goblins of all time! This card is a great way to begin the game. It can pick off cards that have low toughness. Sacrificing this card is so fun. Double dipping. Double dipping.
#1 Wort, The Raidmother

Some may be saying, “What? This card?” Yes. This card. I hate green goblins, but this card is good enough to redeem them. The reasoning? Blaze, Fireball, any red spell that costs X. This card easily allows you to double damage from cards like that. Usually when you use Blaze or a card like it you do a lot of damage. Around eight or so. If this card is in play you’ll do 16. This goblin makes direct damage all the more powerful.
Thanks for reading! If you feel there should be a particular card on here or want to discuss the rankings, feel free to comment! Have a good day.

good list.. what are your thoughts on Horde of Boggarts and Rise of the Hobgoblins, Warchief should be out before them usually..
having Goblin Lackey in your first draw is always a good way to start a game too..
I agree with Lews, doesnt belong on the list though.. but with War Strike, Mob Justice and Goblin Grenade you barely need to attack, just squirt goblins out quickly..
Drakdrium13, posted this comment on Apr 28th, 2009
Yeah, that is a good point. Those cards are good. I really wanted to put those cards on the list, but i figured i would only include real goblins. It was a tough call!
Thanks for your input. Glad you liked the article

You forgot the best goblin of all time: Goblin sharpshooter. Its almost a guaranteed win against any weenie deck.

So… when are you going to start writing better articles? Or do you want me to lie to you and say you did a swell job?
Drakdrium13, posted this comment on May 4th, 2009
Hmm, Goblin Sharpshooter might have to make an appearance on this list. I disagree on the claim that it’s the best goblin of all time, but it actually is pretty sweet.
Also, as for “no”’s comment, I feel that I already write articles of a decent quality. I see nothing wrong with this list.
Please feel free to comment on my articles. However, I want to know what you have problems with. I don’t simply want to have a “this sucks” or “you’re dumb” style comments. They don’t say anything other than your inability to vocalize your distaste in something

Earwig Squad is number one on my list, 2 goblin lackey, 3 Goblin Warchief, 4 Siege-Gang Commander, 5 Festering Goblin…
Drakdrium13, posted this comment on May 5th, 2009
I disagree with earwig squad. there are better cards that do the same thing and it also doesn’t seem to be an ability that works with traditional gobin decks. perhaps a rogue deck i suppose. however, it is not a bad card at all.
The other goblins i agree are very powerful. i don’t think they’re my top goblins, though they are all great. thanks for the feedback! i appreciate it
MaR, posted this comment on May 14th, 2009
True, I guess not all time but
4x earwig squad + 4x thoughtseize = angry opponent
Neuters their deck of combos and wrath of gods lol
Then again Im playing standard rogues right now, but my vintage goblin deck:
4x goblin lackey
4x goblin warchief
4x goblin ringleader
4x siege-gang
4x goblin piledriver….my favourites out of the deck
Drakdrium13, posted this comment on May 14th, 2009
yes, in standard those earwig squad would be the prime choice for disabling combos. however, this list is more for vintage/casual play. i totally agree with you though.
Pete, posted this comment on May 18th, 2009
I’m with MaR on this one, lackey, warchief, ringlieader, wiege-gang and piledriver are the ultimate goblin dreamteam – throw goblin king in there and you’re a winner for sure. wicked list, a lot of help for deck building, so thanks

Hello, can you tell me a card which like Alpha Status but in red?
Or Shifting Sliver in Goblin?
Thanks a lot
Drakdrium13, posted this comment on May 19th, 2009
Well, as far as I know there isn’t anything for goblins quite as good as shifting sliver, but Caterwauling Boggart is a good way to start. It certainly makes things tougher. Just get a lot of creatures with fear or the red version of fear which is yet unnamed (Skirk Shaman is one card with it)
As for a red Alpha Status, I find that Bravado can be effective. It’s only +1/+1, but you can always stack two on something if you really need it. Also, it’s only for creatures you control. However, it’s pretty much the best there is to work with right now. Hope that helps out a little
Thanks for reading!

You helped me a lot, thank you:)

Read the whole thing, very impressive.
Really helped me, since i play a black/red goblin deck (similar to Wolfgang Eder’s “Goblin Bidding” deck) Nice to see some black goblin/spell representation!
I can’t help but notice that goblin sharpshooter is not included in this list. May I perhaps have your reasoning for this?
Drakdrium13, posted this comment on May 28th, 2009
Sorry, but I really overlooked Goblin Sharpshooter! When I get the time to, I will include it in the list. It really is an amazing card and has some sweet combos.
Thanks for pointing it out. Sometimes they just slip by you when you’re writing these things in the early morning after a draft!
Nalius, posted this comment on May 29th, 2009
Well, from a goblin playstyle point of view, how isnt goblin sharpshooter number one?
Goblins are almost based on sacrificing (and now regeneration with black additions) With goblin sharpshooter, you basically get a free 1 damage every time one of your creatures, or your opponents for that matter, gets destroyed.
I easily burn down opponents when I’m either desperate with tapped goblins or they have a large defense up.
Sac goblins for buffs on other goblins, and every time one sacs, theres your free 1 damage. Take it or leave it. =)
Actually, this card burns down opponents almost no matter what the situation is.
I guess I could be wrong, and this could just be a deck point of view, but from the looks of this list including “benefits other goblins” abilities all over it, I would assume this card would benefit most being with other goblins, but even other creatures in most red or black decks (Since most all red and black decks involve causing massive damage to players and their creatures)
I am not trying to spark some silly internet war here. I’m just saying that, from my point of view, goblin sharpshooter is a logical choice for this list and should be first on this list without a doubt in my mind…

you pointed out some interesting goblins, and many deserve to be on a best of all time list but come on now man a best of all time list and these aren’t even on here:

what about Goblin Lackey..he is da best
Observer, posted this comment on Sep 20th, 2009
You should try to be a little bit objective while writing lists like this. Just because you “hate green goblins” is no reason to leave them out of this list, especially when 3 of them belong in the top ten.
Also, no sharpshooter, no sparksmith, and piledriver #15?
This obviously isn’t a ‘best of’ list and you should stop advertising it as such.
Skirk, posted this comment on Sep 21st, 2009
This person left a good deck ideas. And a lot of newbies cant get ahold of lackys. And what experienced player needs to know what the best goblins are? If you want to talk about pointless good goblin cards what about mons goblin raiders. When magic first started, the creatures were mostly 3/3 for 4 mana, a goblin 1/1 for 1 was revolutionary. cudos to the person for making the list, i think raid mother is too high of a mana cost to be a traditional goblin deck. my vote to best goblin would have to be skirk prospector. oh and to someones earlier comment, when x is involved in a spell, and the spell is copied, on the copy the x = 1 because that is its termed converted mana cost.
Chief, posted this comment on Oct 24th, 2009
My goblin strategy is to use one drops, and brightstone ritual, then skirk prospector, sack them for more mana and blaze. Toss in boggart shenanigans and it’s overkill. The only problems I’ve run into have been anti creature decks and a certain zombie deck that had a noxious ghoul. I don’t even use the creatures as attackers, just as a mana source and simultaneous direct damage source

Goblin war strike needs to be in this list ( even tho its not a goblin)
1 mountain to do X dmg for the number of goblin in play
is 1 of the best card for a goblin deck
( ive seen it win games many time )
