MTG: You Can’t Fool Me MTG 2010
18 cards from the new set aren’t new at all! They’re actually reprints disguised as new cards! See the cards that MTG lied to us about!
MTG 2010 had really cool cards in it. The set was designed to be about 50% new cards and 50% reprints. However, some of the cards in this set are reprints but are being marketed as brand new cards. These cards aren’t new! They’re reprints! You’ll find that these cards are either identical to older cards or have only a difference in creature type (or rarity). Everything else, even mana cost, is the same! They’re organized by color and the fake cards’ counterparts are from the most recent sets they were printed in.
I apologize for the difference in image size, but will fix the problem when I can. Also, there isn’t much content. This is just an eye-opener when you set the cards next to each other. My personal opinion can be found at the end of the article.
White Cards

There is a difference in rarity here, making Savannah Lions much less powerful.

Once again, the difference in rarity cheapens the original.
Blue Cards

Black Cards

Feral Shadow appeared in a few other more sets more recently, but since they were special sets I used this version instead.

This card is also the same as Phyrexian Ghoul.

Red Cards

Green Cards

Although Centaur Warrior is one of the reverse TimeShifted cards from Future Sight, it seems stupid to not just reprint it.

How many different versions of Grizzly Bears will there be!!!???
Final Thoughts
So, why make this article? Because I feel it isn’t fair to the players that the MTG staff told us all about these new cards we were going to have and are trying to act like these cards are new! They’re not! These are reprints. It’s as if they thought we were too dumb to notice. If a card is exatly the same, then just reprint it!
I can understand Vampire Aristocrat because they want vampire to become a bigger creature type. I can also understand Goblin Artillery because orcs are basically extinct in MTG. However, cards like Disentomb and Runeclaw Bears are not needed. They are a cheap way to say that they made new cards. Zombie Goliath and Dreg Reaver are also too similar. The only difference is one is a beast and one is a giant. That will never make a difference.
Look at the sets the orginal cards are from. None of them come from more than six years ago (excluding Feral Shadow and Knight Errant). It makes no sense to reprint such recent cards. Espcially Dreg Reaver, since it is still legal in Standard.
The bottom line is that this was stupid. It was a way for the MTG staff to brag about new cards without actually making new cards. An there are more than just these 18 fake new cards. There are about three other ones that are the same as older cards except for creature type, rarity, and mana cost (a difference in the type of mana needed to play it; i.e. 2B instead of 1BB). This is the case with cards like Warpath Ghoul (which is a copy of Python).
This was a bad move on the MTG staff’s part and I hope that next time they won’t do something like this. The rule changes were bad enough, but being lied to is over the top.
Tell me what you think… Is this ridiculous, or is it just an over reaction? Would you rather have the older cards just reprinted, keep things the way they are, or simply have brand new cards and not reprints at all? What’s right and what’s wrong? You decide!
Thanks for reading and I look forward for your input.

i too am glad for many of these cards being in the set. however, i wish still wish they had just straight up reprinted the stuff rather than make these fake cards

i find it hilarious the day after i wrote this the MTG site released an article addressing this very topic. and that there are actually two more cars that should be one this list (Blinding Mage/Master Decoy and Essence Scatter/Remove Soul)
they had decent reasons, but i feel my rage was justified and i still feel the same way

Yea…but now that they have different names, you can effectively have twice as many of a single card. You can look at all the colors and find untold numbers of 1/1 creatures for one mana. Maybe you want a deck with a lot of draw, little mana, and 40 1/1 creatures….well now you can. For the zombie decks out there, having a another zombie dude to throw in might be beneficial.
I don’t consider this bad persay, just like every set there are bad cards and they made many of these those cards. Yay, a 2/1 for two! crap.

i agree that it is nice to be able to have more of the same in a deck. I mean, you can have twice as many Savannah Lions if you want now! However, it just seems like some of the reprints weren’t necessary. Like with Dreg Reaver and Zombie Goliath. both are legal in standard right now and both aren’t really that good.
I am excited for some of these reprints and modifications, but really, i’d rather have just had either new cards (in place of these modified ones) or just straight up reprints. It’s not bad when one or two cards are modified, but one nearly 20 are, then it’s a little much for me

Adding more flavor to the game was a huge goal of 2010. I believe most of the reprints are just more appropriate names/images/ideas for the same card.

i know some reprints are for flavor which is nice, but i would prefer either new cards or reprints.
plus, Zombie Goliath and Stormfront Pegasus are inexcusable. no increase in flavor or even slightly significant change in creature type (in the case of Zombie Goliath). changes like that are just stupid.

good work. these cards are indeed disappointing. i would contend, however that the majority of these “reprints” were copies from 10th edition which is dropping out of standard format. as for dreg reaver, i got nothin… if they wanted to keep these solid core cards in standard, i agree with you, just reprint them. regardless, i’m glad i still have these spells to pull from in order to school you in tournament play!!!
