Texas Hold’em Poker Basics
Playing Internet poker can be fun.
Poker online has the same basic principles of poker at your kitchen table. The variation of increasing antes on timed intervals happens online. If you like to play cards, any card game, you will like to learn Texas Hold’em. Playing on the net has some advantages, and of course, some disadvantages. You can be playing for points or you can be playing for an occasional cash prize. Some online games are free.
Most Poker Rooms online have free periods of play with a membership. On the Internet, the tournaments are ongoing, and a tournament isn’t over until one person has won all the points. It is a competitive game like football, basketball or tennis. You will need to select an undistracted couple of hours for tournament play. Tourneys are running back to back on the net. You are at your computer, in your home, which can be good or bad so choose your time well.
Playing any card game – you must know the value of the cards, and the rules of the virtual table. Most people don’t have a Book of Hoyle so I will quickly mention the better to the best hands in progressive value. This is from lower to higher value:
- An Ace
- A Pair
- Two Pairs
- Three of a Kind
- A Straight
- A Flush
- A Full House
- Four of a Kind
- Straight Flush
- Royal Flush
We all speak dialects when we come from different regions, because of this, you may need to learn some terminology for card games. This terminology is the most common card language used:
- The “Buy-in” or “Ante” is the minimum amount each player posts before he or she can play the hand.
- “Bet” is the wager a player makes on his hand.
- “Check” is used to pass the wagering rights to the next player.
- “Call” is making the same wager as previously betted.
- “Raise” is to call plus adding more points to a bet. A “Raise” on the virtual table can’t be mistaken where as a “Raise” on a real table can be problematic.
- “Fold” means you quit the hand.
Gambling isn’t the real function of playing cards. You have heard the old adage “gambling is for losers.” A gambler waits until the last card to make his hand, but the player’s hand is made before the last card. Probability is a card player’s friend, but the gambler doesn’t use probability. Because we are talking probability there isn’t any guarantee in winning, and a gambler will win sometimes. But the observant person with good memory usually wins more often. In Texas Hold’em, cards aren’t revealed on a fold. This is the evening factor between the gambler, and a good card player.
If you are a very good Bridge player, you may only be less than average Texas Hold’em player. There are unrevealed reasons in play. Are you looking for a little wisdom in playing poker? Remember we are speaking of Texas Hold’em, Ok! A player’s hand should be good on the first turn of the three community cards. If your hand is a winning hand or if it can be a winning hand, it should be made on the fourth card known as the turn card. If you always wait until last turnover card, “The River Card” you are a gambler, and not a player.
Play Poker for fun. Online poker play is in the live scenario. There can be people unknown or there can be people you know. When an online tournament begins, you don’t have a choice of the players at your table. As play progresses, you can be changed to different tables without notice, and you will have to endure the chance of facing good and bad players. Most online poker rooms do analyze people’s play and they do attempt to seat people with similar skills or have tournaments based on skill levels.
Self-control is the best skill known on or off the poker table. Patience is needed, but not a patient of addiction. “Live long and prosper” or I should say live long in prosperity.
