The Dark, Fallen Empires and Legends: Best Cards in the Early Sets 2

The Dark, Fallen Empires and Legends: Best Cards in the Early Sets 2

Ever wonder what the BEST card in The Dark, Fallen Empires and Legends is? A review of the three MTG sets.

Legends, the Dark and Fallen Empires were all Magic the Gathering Sets released in 1994 with no correlation to each other.  Here is a quick overview of the sets, along with some unique cards from them! Best of all the voted “best card” in the set follows the sections

Legends – Released June 1994

Legends was the first of the three sets to be released. It was a monumental set in terms of new mechanics and has several cards in it that continue to see much play many years later. Hence the name “Legends”, the set introduced the concept of legendary land and creatures. It also introduced the concept of multi-colored cards to the game. Obviously this is a mechanic that is crucial to the game even to this day. Prior to Legends though, there were no multicolored cards in the game. It also Introduced the concept of rampage; an overlooked and lost mechanic that allowed creatures to get bigger if they were assigned multiple blockers. Rampage, along with banding eventually phased out of the came and have not been used in many years.

Legends was supposed to be a plain and simple expansion for the game but turned into one of the most powerful sets ever printed (arguably the best since “Alpha” overall). it has many very powerful cards and, for the first time, really used Enchantments as a strong aspect of strategy. The best card in the set utilized a mechanic such that it is quite possibly the 10th “Power 9″ card. It provides a rather broken advantage to its caster, and retails around $120.00 a copy. The Funny thing is, it isn’t even a “Rare” card!

Mana Drain – Uncommon

Runners up : Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Moat & Mirror Universe

The Dark – Released August 1994

I guess you could call The Dark a follow up to Legends, although the two really have nothing to do with each other. the dark is a much smaller expansion and only has a little over 100 cards in it. It focuses more on a sinister side of the game and many of the cards have unique powers that deal damage in unorthodox ways to their controller or the opponent. Many creatures have drawbacks to their overly powerful advantages.

There really are no “Famous cards” in this set and it recieved much less attention than Legends. Some of the cards are now obsolete, as they have had more modernized counterparts in recent sets. The “best” card sells for around 10 – 15 dollars and is popular to play with. It is also only an uncommon. Having its ability is unique because it is very hard to prevent…

Maze of Ith – Uncommon

Runners up: Ball Lightning & Blood Moon

Fallen Empires – Released November 1994

Fallen empires was, in all, a disappointing set. It introduced the concept of creature tokens to the game and showcased the debut of the Thallid and Saproling creatures. Besides that the other cards in the set are basically obsolete to modern play. Fallen Empires has fallen in popularity and is in low demand. None the less, it does have some interesting strategies in is fun to play with. With a definitive color segregation, it is a great set to learn to play with.

When it came to choosing the best card in the set it was a challenge. The following card can be used in a modern situation and is rather unique in its playability. What? its a COMMON? yet another illustration of how usable this set is outside of itself. They can be picked up at the corner store for a buck a piece.

Hym to Torach – Common

runner up : Goblin Grenade & Umm… Elvish Farmer?

These Sets were followed by the Ice Age Block (<– Click for info and review) and were the last to function independently as expansions.
