Horse Racing Betting Strategies

Betting strategies that will help maximize your profits.

I use a fairly simple progressive betting system for my win bets. I start out with an amount
I want to win in each race (OBJECTIVE), remember the more you want to win, the higher your
wagers will be, so your objective will depend entirely on your bankroll. I recommend using a
$2 objective. So, your opening bet will be $2. If your horse loses then you add OBJECTIVE +
WAGER + $2 + NEW OBJECTIVE which in this case would be $6. In your second race you divide
your objective by the post time odds of your horse and round up to the nearest divisible of
2….e.g. obj=$6, odds are 2-1, wager would be $4 (6/2=3, round up to 4). You continue
these until you get a winner, and then the objective drops back to $2.

As soon as you hit a
winner, you will get back all the money you previously wagered and show a profit (if you
don’t hit a winner until the 5th race, then you should show a minimum profit of $10…5 races
X $2 per race obj. = $10). I’m going to use my picks for Turf Paradise (04/19/2005) as an
example of how well this works. I only had 3 chalky winners in the 9 race card yet still
showed a nice profit at the end of the day… here’s how my wager sheet looked…

Race Horse Objective Odds Wager Outcome Prof/Loss
1 1 2 6-5 2 W 4.40 +2.40
2 6 2 9-5 2 LOSS +0.40
3 7 6 5-1 2 LOSS -1.60
4 4 10 1-2 20 W 3.00 +8.40
5 8 2 6-5 2 LOSS +6.40
6 7 6 9-2 2 LOSS +4.40
7 6 10 6-5 10 LOSS -5.60
8 7 22 3-1 8 LOSS -13.60
9 7 32 3-5 54 W 3.20 +18.80

So there you have it. If I had just played $2 bets on each horse to win I would have been down a little over $7. This clearly shows the power of this simple little strategy.

EXACTA:

I play the 1,2,3 with 1,2,3,4 ($2 ex costs $18). The rule of thumb for this bet is that the
odds of all 4 horses must total 14 or more to make it profitable. For those of you who like
to take a little gamble then key the 4 (usually a real longshot) with the other 3.

TRIFECTA:

I usually play 1,2 with 1,2 with 1,2,3,4 or 1,2 with 1,2,3 with 1,2,3,4. There are all kinds
of combinations which you can use again depending on how much you wish to spend.

PICK 3:

There are 2 methods I like here. Simple method is just to play the top 3 in each of the
three races for a cost of $54. The other method is cheaper and gives you the possibility of
hitting the pick 3 TWICE. This involves picking a value horse plus a backup in one leg…for
the example, lets assume that your value horse is in the second leg of the pick-3…you
would buy 3 tickets as follows..

  • TICKET ONE 1,2,3 with 1 with 1,2,3,4 $24
  • TICKET TWO 1,2 with 1, with 1,2 $8
  • TICKET THREE 1,2,3 with 2 with 1,2 $12

If your value horse (1) wins then you have a chance of cashing two winning tickets.

Some of you probably already know these methods but for those of you who don’t, I hope this
has helped a little.
