Poker Terms for new players.

Hole Cards.

Holding.

A Hand.

Hollywood.

An unconvincing extravagance in one’s style of play, meant to resemble confidence but more often signalling the opposite.

Home Game.

Any game played privately, not in a casino or card room.

Home Run Hitter.

Someone who calls inadvisably and then, irritatingly, wins.

Hook.

Slang for a Jack.

Hot Deck.

Hot Hands.

A dealer who deals a high percentage of good hands is said to have hot hands.

Hot Seat.

A particular seat at a table which has recently appeared to bring luck and good hands to the player who sits in it.

House.

1. Refers to a casino or card room, in particular to its involvement with the game itself.

2. Slang term for a Full House.

House Cut.

A percentage of every pot taken by the house in card rooms and casinos. The house cut exists because poker, unlike all other casino games, is not played against the house at all, but is instead played against other players.

Hunt.

Looking further into the deck after the hand is over to see what cards would have come next.

Hunting season.

Slang for two pairs, aces and twos. (Bullets and Ducks).
