Poker Terms for new players.
J’s.
Jab Shuffle.
A dishonest shuffle technique, whereby cards are manipulated during the shuffle.
Jack.
The lowest of the court cards, ranking between a 10 and a Queen.
Jack it Up.
Slang meaning to raise.
Jackpot.
A prize, accursed progressively as a rake from various pots over time, and awarded to a player who fulfils the specific criteria of the Jackpot.
Jackpot Drop.
Method by which a Jackpot is collected, via rake taken from the Antes or Blinds.
Jackson Five.
Slang for a Full House consisting of three Jacks and a pair of fives.
Jack up.
To raise the limit from its current level.
Jagging.
Method by which cards are marked by a cheater’s fingernail.
Jake.
Colloquialism for a Jack.
Jam.
To make a significant bet, or to go all-in in a game of No-Limit.
Jammed Pot.
A pot which has been fattened up by series of jamming bets.
J-Boy.
Slang for a Jack.
J Hook.
Slang for a Jack.
Jog Cut.
A dishonest Brief, made by one player to signal to an accomplice where in the deck to make a cut.
John.
Slang for a Jack.
Joint.
Slang for a casino or card room.
Joker.
An additional card belonging to no suit and having no traditional rank. Its is used as a wild card in games which allow it. Also referred to as a Bug.
Joker Poker.
Describes all games in which the Joker is played.
Judgement Fold.
A fold based on careful consideration of all the factors at play, the size of the bet, the size of the pot, and the potential hands of your opponent.
Judith.
Slang for the Queen of Hearts.
Juice.
1. Slang for the rake taken by the casino or card rooms. Also known as Rake Chop.
2. To mark the cards. Sometimes used in the phrase, “Juice Joint”, meaning a bent establishment.
