Immersive Video Games
Put yourself into the video game, literally.
With more than 1.6 billion video game consoles sold to consumers in the last five years, the video game industry has become a booming multibillion dollar venture. Players from many different lifestyles and generations now find themselves with a vast selection of video game types to choose from.

However, as console makers push to invent and release the next hottest video gaming system, the landscape is slowly changing from a hands on
experience into a completely immersive one.

Soon, next generation video games consoles will be more futuristic than anyone could have imagined. Envision yourself putting in two ultra thin flexible LED contacts into your eyes. Next, you take a small headset that resembles a pair of glasses but without lenses, instead they have flat transceivers built into them. They are able to connect wirelessly with the gaming console located in the room. With the flick of a switch the LED contacts are activated and your entire field of vision is immersed into the video game that you have selected. Sound far out? Engineers at the University of Washington are working on this technology and hope that within two years, it will be ready for testing.

hi Eddie,
nice post, well, everything about computers that we are enjoying now were once seen on movies only…I would say, virtual reality games will be the next trend…thanks

I am waiting for the day that virtual reality becomes “Completely Immersive” this is an awesome article, thanks for writting about stuff that really boggles the readers minds.

Personally, I have to believe that this has little marketing viability in terms of the entertainment industry as opposed to military or commercial applications. The thing is; who is going to buy their child ridiculously expensive chips to put -IN/ON THEIR EYES- (Assuming I read the article correctly)? Children are notorious for losing small things and there are all manner of nasty things that can go wrong with a perfectly good set of optical orbs should proper sanitation fail to be observed. Granted I realize gaming isn’t just for kids as I am a gamer and will be celebrating my 27th this year, but the liability alone is enough to scare away most companies from persuing this product as a video gaming system.
I dream of the futuristic gameplay, too, and have ever since I was a sprout saving little blue dots from the mean green dots in my atari 2600 edition of Defenders. But from where my view point lies, I sincerely doubt we’ll ever see anything like this technology.

JaiGuru:
The same parents who buy their children PS3’s and games rated mature.
The Idea of virtual reality is a bit absurd now, but like nobert said, today’s technology would be absurd to think of in the past.

I want this technology soo bad, seriously if this happens and well, i will be in my own personal nirvana. Imagine having dream like quality fantasies at your fingertips. Im not hinting at anything naughty i would just love to say fly through clouds or explore the universe. That would make my life.

I will be first in line to buy this kind of technology!

I like your commend Mike! Once the contacts are perfected, they will take up your entire field of vision, can you imagine Google releasing a new version of “Virtual Google Earth” so you can fly around the world and also learn in great detail about places you might not have the chance to visit. The technology is being created, it is just a few years away.

I dont know about anyone else but the last thing I want to do is put something in my eyes. To begin with how much technology have we all seen that malfunctions? How many surfaces of devices are rough or not well made? Would anyone in their right mind trust anything that sits on their eyes that were not directly prescribed by a skilled physician? The whole notion that putting something in our eye is a sensible way to market is beyond stupidity. We cant manage to make anything careful enough to prevent some sort of injury and since you cant grow a new set of eyes why would anyone in their right mind want to perhaps damage something that cant be replace! Sorry the dolt who thought this one up is just that!

I don’t like the idea of contacts in the eyes just to play a game. There’s no guarantee that could damage your eyes over time, or there could be an accident.
As for all this immersive game hoopla, anybody ever see the movie “Lawnmower Man”? If you haven’t yet, rent it. It’s all about this kind of stuff and what can go wrong.

How does this article make you feel? The question is, will Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony take up the idea and invent virtual reality video games in the near future? I also see something like this making games like Second Life to be renamed into “First Life” (Evil Grin) I hope everyone enjoys this article.
