Improve Your Surgical Dexterity
A short guide to help improve your surgical dexterity.

Most of us have watched Grey’s Anatomy, and we wonder just how they all perform their complex surgeries, and how they keep their hands so steady and manage to complete hard movements whilst holding pieces of bowl!
Here is a very short guide to try and help you improve your surgical dexterity.
- First of all one of the key things is to have great hand-eye co-ordination. There are many ways to do this, and loads of things you can do with friends or on your own. The best ways are to play games and sports that involve these skills. The best and most social would be tennis, so blow the cobwebs off your racket, grab a friend and go out there and hit some balls! This will also help you keep fit and healthy, so you can have the perfect McSteamy bod! Or get as skinny as Ellen Pompeo!

Along with tennis there are many other games that need good hand eye co-ordination, such as squash or badminton, which have the same kind of principles as tennis. You have to hit a ball, or shuttle-cock with a racket. Squash uses the smallest ball, and so would probably be the best! This is also the hardest physically, especially if you’re playing against someone really good who will make you run untill you drop!
Simply catching a ball can help improve your hand-eye co-ordination too. Throw a small ball against a wall, or throw to a partner. Catching this will help you, and try catching with your non dominant hand. This will improve your ambidexterity which is also key for surgeons.
Knitting
Knitting has been shown to improve dexterity too, by making your fingers used to moving fast. Start off knitting a scarf, and then maybe try some socks for babies and soon you could be knitting your own clothes!
Piano
The piano at high grades needs good control over your hands and if you work hard at it will help your hands to become more flexible and agile.
Video Games
Certain video games help you control your hands whilst looking at a screen which dramatically helps in laproscopic surgeries. Using a wii will help you get steadier hands. Using other consoles such as PlayStation and X-box will allow you to use your hands more freely too. There are many simulation games available on the Internet too which help you grasp the simple side of complex surgeries.
I hope this helped, and good luck on your surgical career!
