Bullies at School

Bullies at School

Bullies can make school a scary place. Everyone is different and a bully can always find something to make you feel bad. Always tell an adult what is going on and here are two websites to go to for advice.

Bullies are a big problem at school. For many children school and playgrounds can be a scary place. Bullies say mean things, push you down or even hurt you. One girl says she gets picked on because she is short. But this year her school learned how to deal with bullies. They made posters and wrote chalk messages on the sidewalk about how they felt about bullies. They also signed a petition promising they wouldn’t bully other kids.

Lots of kids get teased at school, so if you are one of them don’t think you are alone. Every kid has something that makes him different and that means a bully can find some reason to bully you. It’s even happened to kids who grew up to be models, business moguls, or movie stars. Kids made fun of Tom Cruise, and Bill Gates because they had a learning problem, and Tyra Banks was teased because she was tall and skinny. Jullianne Moore was teased because she had freckles.

If you have been bullied, Joel Meyers the director of the School Safety Center at Georgia State University says. “Hang out with your friends and invite others to be a part of your friendship group.” If there is a certain part of your school that seems unsafe-a stairway, for instance-Meyers said you should tell a grown up and stay away from that place if you can. Other good ideas are walking away from the bully as soon as he or she starts to get mean, and let a grown-up know what is going on. You might also want to think ahead about things to say back to someone who bullies you a lot.

Why do some kids want to be so mean? Joel Meyers said lots of bullies treat other kids badly because they don’t feel good about themselves. It is true that the people who get bullied feel bad too! But Meyers said some kids who get bullied end up with big problems like depression. That’s one reason he hopes schools will pay more attention to stopping bullies. Another reason, he said is that kids who bully can turn into people who cause even worse problems in the future.

Do you think you are a bully? Here is a simple test. Think about how you would feel if you were the other kid. Be aware of things other kids might be sensitive about. It’s important to know you can be a bully using words as well as by hitting or shoving.

You have given some great tips here, Ruby. I hope this article finds it’s way to children who can use it. they need to know there is something they can do besides endure the humility and pain.

Great article, Ruby.

It’s awful when kids are bullied at school.

Some children learn how to bully at home, either by being bullied themselves, or having to act up in order to get any attention at all. I was bullied at school because I didn’t have the right clothes, shoes, was too tall, skinny, bright and the list goes on.

I learned to deal with it by ignoring it, but I am aware that not everyone can do this. It’s a really big problem and I am worried about my children getting bullied at school.

Thanks guys for your comments as always. I was bullied at school too because I was shy, small for my age and I didn’t have the clothing the other kids had.I know how painful it is. I worry about kids getting bullied today and I am afraid the schools don’t do enough about it. I would like to see school meetings with children, teachers, and parents to make the information available to everyone and find solutions to fix the problem.

Bullies are really pain in the ***…oppsss… I didn’t say it. Its just that they’re really are! They are the reasons why most kids stop going to school.

Great read.

I enjoyed your article, Ruby. It’s a shame that kids have to be bullied in school. Bullies make school so miserable for others.

A well written article and I am pleased to say that some schools are addressing the problem and teaching children how to deal with these issues.

it is a shame we have to send our kids off to be bullied at shcool. It’s hard enough for them out there anyway.

I too wish we had some way to keep our kids from being bullied. It is a real worry.
