Beer Pong Rules

Beer Pong Rules

Rules for a drinking game called Beer Pong. Typical rules played in Isla Vista, a college town in Santa Barbara, California.

These are typical rules for a college drinking game called Beer Pong. Obviously there are countless variations to these rules, but these are the most popular rules used at the time

Two teams of two.

Each side sets up ten cups filled just under halfway with beer and arranges them like a typical bowling formation (like a triangle, or pyramid.)

The goal of the game is to simply toss a ping pong ball from one side of a 6-foot table into the opposing team’s cups. When a cup is made, the defending team (non-shooting team, or team opposite the shooter) must drink that cup. Each team takes turns, with each teammate shooting once. The typical way to choose which team shoots first is called “Eye to Eye.” Without looking at the cups, and looking into an opponent’s eyes as you shoot, on three, opposing players attempt to make the other teams cup.

Whoever makes it in any cup first gets to shoot first. Once all the cups on an opposing teams side are gone, you win, and the losing team has to drink whatever beer is left on the winning teams side. There are some rules, however.

  1. No leaning. If played on a proper sized table, the elbow may not pass the end of the table.
  2. A bounce counts as two cups.
  3. If both teammates make it in any two cups (and not the same cup) their team gets to shoot again.
  4. If both teammates make it in the same cup, it counts as three and they get to shoot again.
  5. No interfering with the ball until it has touched an object, such as the table, a cup, or any obstacles (empty beer cans, or leftover cups left around the table.)
  6. Drink before you shoot. If it is your turn to drink due to a cup being made, you must finish that beer completely before you can shoot.
  7. A beer that is spilled is out, beer must be emptied and cup is removed from the rack.
  8. You get two “re-racks” at any point at the beginning of your turn. A re-rack is rearranging the cups you are aiming at in any fashion you wish.
  9. Rebuttal – After the last cup is made, the “losing” team gets a rebuttal. This is simply an extra turn to allow the “losing” team to either catch up, or at least decrease the amount of cups they have to drink. A “Shoot Until You Miss” rule is in place which is simply, if you make it, you continue shooting until you miss. If you make all the cups left, teams go into a 1-cup overtime.
  10. If agreed by all players, you can adjust, make up, remove, or pretty much do whatever you want with any rule, at any time, for any reason. It’s a drinking game, so have fun!
